Chapter 15

It Wasn't Me

"Do you know why I called you in here, champ?", A well-built man asked, a tone of obvious mockery in his voice.

"No, Coach.", The boy answered carefully.

"Could you take a wild guess?", The man asked again, scratching his impossibly reflective bald head, then placing his baseball cap back on.

"Is it cause what happened to Thompson?", the boy quivered, running a hand through his dark brown curls.

"It's about THOMPSON.", The man hollered, as he continued to pace the room, circling the seat the boy was sitting in.

"Why am I first?", the boy almost whispered.

"Because you're the good one. I'd like to think that you'd tell me whatever needs to be told.", the man answered, slamming his clipboard on the desk. "Now, let's find out what happened, shall we?"

No answer.

A drop of sweat trickled down the boy's forehad. He wiped it away, hoping his coach didn't notice.

"Tell me your version of the story.", the man demanded.

"Coach, I already said I was sorry about getting to class late. I swear it'll never happen again.", a young boy sat, restless, with his hands constantly running through his messy auburn hair.

"But, that, and now, this; you really are quite the troublemaker these days, arn't you? Would you like to be kicked off the team?", a voice penetrated the room, deep, and much like a roar, as it's magnitude echoed through walls.

"I thought the others already told you what happened. What's the point of hearing it from me?", He asked, frustrated.

"I want your side of the story. You were pretty close with Thompson. I think you know exactly what happened, ma' boy.", the abnormally large man patted the boy on the back. "I know how much this team means to you. And I think we both know how much of a big deal it was that I was gonna have you starting this year."

"And I already told you how-"

"Reese, cut the act. I want the truth. Out with it, now. Or so help me god, you won't get starting anything this year or next, and I will see to it that absolutely no scouts ever hear a word about little Finney Reese."

"Did you just call me-"

"The next words you speak better be the beginning to the story of what you saw at tryouts. And this better include every last detail.", the man, walking around with an air if intimidation, slamming his fist on the desk, causing a small jump from the boy, who had anxiously been weighing his options.

Silence followed and both men watched eachother.

A sigh escaped the lips of the light-haired boy, who was a few inches shorter than the bulky man.

"It started with this girl...Nobody meant anything by it."
