23 - "Sometimes you just know..."

Chapter 23

"Get off of me," I hissed but Chelby pushed me into the lockers again.

"No, you're going to pay. My boyfriend just told me he thought you were hot. And Alex already likes you and Rob already thinks you're cute, so just stay out of my way. No boy should ever like you," Chelby spat in my face and although I try not to take what she says seriously, it hurt.

I pushed her off of me hard and she stumbled backwards

"Oops," I mumbled sarcastically and walked away without another word.

Sarah was right, Chelby was one of the evil cheerleaders in the movies.

I just went to go get my lunch money and then comes Chelby.

I thought about what she said for a moment. I know about Alex liking me, but Zach and Rob too? No, no, no she's wrong. They don't like me...

But as I walked to the cafeteria two feelings mixed around inside of me.

Guiltiness and happiness.

I was feeling happy because it felt good to be liked once in your life, even if you didn't like them back, and guilty because they all might like me, and I don't like them. I like Austin.

I guess the quote 'Girls want what they can't have' is true after all. I sighed sadly as I picked out a tray and grabbed my lunch which consisted of mac and cheese, fries, and a little fruit.

I don't really get why people always say cafeteria food doesn't taste like real food. I mean some TV shoes actually make toy foods as cafeteria food!

I mean sure it isn't Olive Garden of anything, but it's good food.

I plopped down in a seat next to Sarah and across from Alex and took a bite out of one of my fries. 

"Hayden, Alex has something to ask you," Austin said and nudged Alex with his elbow. 

Austin I'm going to kill you.

"Um, n-no I don't," Alex stuttered and I sighed with relief.

"No, you do," Austin insisted.

No he doesn't.

"Um fine, uh Hayden can I talk to you in private for a second?" Alex asked and my eyes widened. I looked up and saw Alex looking really nervous, almost as much as me.

"U-um," I said and tapped my finger against the table nervously. This can't be happening.

Alex, I don't like you.

"Hayden just go," Rob said and I thought of polite ways to reject him while I was trying to say something.

Just then my phone started ringing. I looked at it and didn't recognize the number but I didn't care.

"Oh I got to take this," I said quickly and ran off. I peeked a look back and saw Alex looking at the ground sadly and he looked like he was about to cry. 

I quickly turned away because watching that was painful, especially since I caused it.

I push the accept button and held the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" I asked and there was silence.

"Um hello?" I asked again. I could hear breathing on the other line. This was getting creepy.

"Hayden?" the voice asked and it sounded familiar but I couldn't make out who it was.

"Uh who is this?" I asked and I heard shuffling in the background and I thought of hanging up because this was strange, but I wanted to find out who the voice was.
