Chapter 16

Sorry it took me so long to update!

I quickly rushed out of the store.

Did he really just say that?! I don't want him to like me.

I mean it feels good to be liked, I'll tell you that, but I don't want to hurt his feelings. He's a close friend of mine and... I just hope he doesn't ask me out.

Maybe if I tell him I like Austin before he makes a move he'll realize that I don't like him and move on?

I walked down the sidewalk, stomping my feet with frustration. Why did I even have to move here? Why did my dad have to be a criminal? Why did my mom have to be so mean?

Why does she have to want me again?

I can't believe I had to meet her.

The person my dad and I had hated over all these years and now she's back. Maybe I should call Dad. I memorized the number the principal gave me.

Dad would know what to do. He may be in jail, but that doesn't mean he's changed.

Once I reached an alley way and I was sure no one was following me, I slipped into the alley and dialed the prison number.

I held it to my ear for a few seconds waiting for someone to answer.

"Hello? This is the Police Department. How may I help you?" the same voice that answered last time asked.

"Hello, this is Hayden Shouse again. I'd like to talk to my dad, Dave Shouse," I said quickly, looking at the people who walked by and making sure none of them were Austin, Alex, or Rob.

There was a bit of shuffling and then I heard the familiar voice of my dad.

"Hayden? Is it really you? I didn't think you'd call again," he said in a weak voice and my heart dropped.

He needs a lot of food. After all of the money we got, he began to eat a lot. They must be starving him. I'd hate to see what he looks like. He probably got really skinny. They probably only give them two meals a day. I'm not sure how much food you get in prison but I'm sure it's not enough for him.

"Hi Dad. Of course I'd call you again," I whispered faintly, still on the look out for any of the boys.

"Is there something you want to talk to me about?"

I shut my eyes tight before answering. I said that one word that I knew he didn't want to hear.

"M-mom," I whispered again, even fainter, hoping maybe he didn't hear, but I had no such luck.

"What?! Honey I said to stay away from her!" he shouted into the phone. I was on the verge of tears by now. At least I knew someone was on my side.

"I know. I don't want to see her but she's already coming next week for dinner. I don't want to see her Dad. I really don't," I said my voice cracking at the end and he sighed.

"Did she ask you anything? Did you talk to her on the phone? What did Uncle Ben tell you?" he bombarded me with questions and I took a deep shaky breath, too distracted by my mom and dad that I forgot to keep a lookout to make sure the boys weren't listening to me.

"She... she wants me to move in with her, Dad," I said in a shaky voice and held the phone up to my ear tighter awaiting his answer.

"Oh hey Hayden, what are you doing back there?" Rob asked at the back of the alley, on the sidewalk standing next to Alex and Austin. I gasped as they walked up to me and quickly started talking into the phone.
