Chapter 42
I waited in my room tirelessly. I called Sarah asking her to come over. I needed to tell her. After everything we've been through, she deserves to know. About my parents, about Austin, about everything.
The doorbell rang and my breath hitched. I needed to do this. She needs to know. I hurried out of my room to go get the door. Sarah stood there scrolling through her phone. She looked up when she heard the door open and smiled.
"Hey what did you want to talk about?" she asked stepping into the house. I shut the door slowly.
"Um let's go in my room," I mumbled and led her to my room. I shut the door behind me and took a deep breath. I can do this. I did it with Austin. I can do it with Sarah. I turned around to face her and she had that worried look on her face.
"Um earlier today, after school, you asked me something," I started and she nodded slowly.
"I ask a lot of questions, Hayden, you're going to have to clarify," she said gesturing for me to go on. I went over and sat next to her. My hands were shaking. I hated having to talk about this, but I knew this was the right thing to do. I had never thought about telling her before, but now it's perfect. Her parents are so lenient and nice that I'm positive they'd let her go to New York with me
"You asked me about my parents, and I'm so sorry for lying to you this whole time Sarah, but I just came here ready not to tell anyone. I had this whole back story for me planned out and I just... I'm sorry," I said, tears pricking my eyes. I quickly blinked them away and sniffed. I felt Sarah's hand on my back and she rubbed it soothingly.
"It's okay, what about your parents?" she asked. I looked up at her through my tear glistened eyes and hesitated before telling her. She spoke up before I could answer.
"Wait... they're not... they're not dead are they?" she asked with a shocked expression on her face. I shook my head.
"No, no, it's not like that. I've just, my mom was an alcoholic when I was really young and um... she did some things to my family...," I trailed off and looked up at Sarah. Her hand never left my back and she gave me a nod telling me to go on, so I did.
"My dad took me in and she went away and I thought she was gone forever and, um, my dad and I didn't have much money, so he robbed banks, lots of them. He robbed them to the point where he was craving money every second. He imagined this world of me and him living happily in a huge mansion, but he got caught a few months ago and he's in jail. And now I'm here," I explained, not getting into much detail about it.
"Oh... I don't know what to say," she started but I cut her off.
"Don't say anything. There's more. My dad got caught in New York so he's there, and I'm going to visit him this weekend. I don't want to go alone. I mean my uncle's there, but-,"
"I need to ask my parens, but I want to be there for you, Hayden. Why didn't you just telling me?" she asked.
"I've never been to high school before, I thought it was this place where you say one wrong thing and everybody hates you for the rest of your high school years, but it's not like that. High school is the place where I found my best friend. I'm so sorry," I said and right when I finished she pulled me in for a huge hug.
"Oh Hayden... I know it doesn't seem like it at all, but you're my best friend... and I love you," she whispered and I hugged her back just as tightly.
"I love you too, Sarah." I said and rested my head on her shoulder.
"Does anyone else know?" she asked and I bit my lip and tensed up. She must've noticed because she pulled bak and looked at me in the eyes.
