Chapter 14

"Hayden, we need to talk."

I froze and my breath hitched.

What was he going to talk to me about?

I opened my mouth to say something back but nothing came out.

"Please open the door Hayden, this is serious," he said urgently.

I came to my senses and slowly hesitantly walked over to the door and unlocked it.

I walked over to my bed and sat down. I watched him open the door and close it behind him.

What is he going to talk to me about?

Does he know I like him?

Was it about yesterday when he saw me crying?

I gulped and fiddled with the hem of my sleeve as I waited for him to talk. I felt the bed move under me and saw that he had sat down at the edge of my bed. I slowly built up my confidence and managed to get a few words out of my mouth.

"What do you want to talk about?" I asked casually and he stared at me for a second before talking.

"About yesterday," he whispered and he heart sunk.

"What.... what a-about y-yesterday?" I stuttered silently and kept my eyes fixed on the ground.

"When I said I didn't hear the whole conversation, I was lying."

I gasped slightly and my eyes went wide. I stared at him not knowing what to say.

He heard me talking to my dad. He heard me talking about my dad being in jail. He heard me crying. He heard everything.

"Austin-," I started but he cut me off.

"Why didn't you tell me Hayden?" he asked his voice cracking at the end. I could sense hurt in his voice but I had no idea why he was hurt. He doens't even like me that way... maybe because we're friends, and he feels hurt I didn't tell him.

"Austin, I haven't told anybody yet, not even Sarah," I explained lightly but he ignored me.

"You lied to me, you told me your parents were just on a business trip," he said raising his voice a little. He stared at me as if wanting to read my minds and I squirmed a little in my seat feeling uncomfortable.

"I just can't believe you lied to me about that. I told you about my dad!"

My guiltiness was replaced with anger.

"Well I"m sorry Austin! Having my dad in jail is not something I want everyone to know! What did you expect for me to just blurt out 'Oh yeah my dad's in jail it's no biggie!' Well I hate to break it to you, Austin, but I. barely. know. you!" I yelled coldly and stared at him.

He stared at me in shock and then looked down at the ground.

I can't believe I just yelled at him like that. Maybe I should say sorry...

"What happened to your mom?" he asked.

My anger stopped and I looked at the ground.

My hands started shaking as I remembered my mom.

How she always hit me. Some of the memories for that came back to me now.

I brought my knees to my chest as tears filled my eyes.

"Get out," I said harshly to Austin.

"Wha-?"

"I said get out!" I yelled and pointed to the door as tears started spilling out of my eyes.

"I'm sorr-," he started.

"Austin, some things are personal. Now leave!" I shouted again harsher than before and he got the message and quickly walked out of my room forgetting to close the door behind him.

I rested my head on my knees and started sobbing loudly.

I can't believe he asked that. Doesn't he know some  things are secret for a reason?

"Hayden? Are you in there?" Uncle Ben asked outside my door. I closed my laptop and walked up to open my bedroom door.

"Want to go out for dinner? I figured it would be nice, and I have some things to tell you," he explained and looked at the ground shamefully as he said the last part. I was confused but nodded.

"Okay, let me just get my shoes," I told him and walked back into my room and grabbed a pair of shoes from my closet and slipped them on. I grabbed my red sweatshirt and pulled it over my head and walked out of my room over to Uncle Ben in the hallway.

"What's the news?" I asked and gave him a puzzled look. He gritted his teeth and gave me a forceful smile.

"I'll explain it over dinner, now come on, how about Macaroni Grill?" he asked and raised his eyebrow at me. Now I know something wasn't up. He never took me to expensive places. I nodded slowly and we walked outside to his car.

I climbed into the passenger seat of his car and he sat in the front seat.

What could be this bad? What did he have to tell me? So much has happened today.

Austin found out my secret. I thought today couldn't get any worse, but I have a feeling it just might.

We drove in silence the rest of the way there. There was nothing to say really, and when we reached the restaraunt I was dreading going inside. What is the bad news that he has to take me out to dinner to tell me?

We walked inside and the Uncle Ben started talking to the waiter and he led us to an empty booth in the back corner. I sat down hesitantly and Uncle Ben sat across from me.

"Hello I'm Will and I'll be your waiter tonight," he said and then winked to me. I blushed and looked down at my hands.

"Can I start you off with any drinks?" he asked and we told him our orders and he walked away. My uncle turned to me with a solemn look and sighed.

"Um, Hayden, you know your mother-," he started but I cut him off.

"What about her?" I asked coldly and clenched my fists at my sides.

I didn't want to hear about her.

I didn't want to talk about her.

I didn't want to think about her.

"Now Hayden, she's changed, just think about-,"

"Think about what?! What are you talking about?!" I demanded and a few people turned their heads and stared at me but I didn't care. I kept staring at my uncle waiting for him to answer.

"Well?!" I asked impatiently. He sighed and put his face in his hands.

"Hayden...

She wants you to move in with her again."

What do you think?
