Chapter 27•
Dumbass play

After getting all my things and settling into my new room at Benny's house, we were finally back at school.

"The Rainbow Factory? Ugh. I hate that hippie junk. This is going to be the worst school play ever." Erica complains.

"So why do you want to be in it?" I ask, "It's on my bucket list." Erica replies, "Why do you have a bucket list?" Sarah asks, "You'll never kick the bucket." She adds.

"It's a long list. And item twelve says 'star in school play.' So I can ram it in the face of that pint-sized drama queen Sunday Clovers." Erica replies, mimicking her voice at the end.

"You sound like she came all the way from Australia on exchange just to bother you." I say, Erica's about to say something else but I cut her off before she does,

"Why can't you just be nice?" I ask, "Don't tell me how to live, Abigail." Erica says. Erica reaches for the pen right as someone else does.

That someone being Benny.

"Age before beauty." Benny says letting Erica have the pen first. I cough awkwardly seeking there was just silence. Benny looks over and smiles at me, I smile back.

"Oh, that's it- let the Eagles of creativity soar!" Our drama teacher starts, "I'm off to make copies of this wonderful script!" She adds, she tries opening the book and it doesn't budge.

"Looks like it doesn't want to open." Ethan says, miss laughs slightly, "It didn't want to be found, either! Hiding away inside that basement wall for 25 years. And I took it out." She says, finally opening the book.

"Ah! There we go. Should be clear sailing from here." She says, walking off.

"I'm the understudy?" Erica asks, venom dripping from her words. Miss nods.

"But I totally nailed that audition!" Erica says, I cringe from the memories.

"You were very... present." Miss says, "Congratulations, Sunday Clovers. You're our lead!" Miss says, as Sunday comes running over, squealing.

She then starts saying lines from the script, Erica sighs annoyed. "Thank you so much, Ms. Lofthouse Oldman-Little." Sunday says.

"Oh, the kids just call me Ms. LOL." Miss says smiling.

"Makes me want to put that little shrimp on the barbie." Erica whispers to us with a horrible Australian accent.

(Ughhhh)

"I know you'll be a read ace understudy, and you'll step right in if something happens to me!" Sunday says, "Yes. If something happens to you." Erica says, pulling her into a hug.

I swear I could hear her bones cracking.

"Wow! You have a lot of positive energy. I can't feel it in my ribs!" Sunday says, catching her breathe.

Erica and I look over at her annoyed, but she just shrugs.

"I'm grinning like a shot fox! I'm gonna do the Harold hold and have a Captain Cook at my dressing room!" Sunday says, squealing then running off.

"What just happened?" Sarah asks, "No idea..." I mumble confused. We start to walk off then Miss calls for Sarah and I.

We turn around, "I know you two would be a perfect fit for Sundrop's best friend, Rainbeam. And Sundrop's sister, Sunny Cloud." Miss says.

"We were just helping Erica out." Sarah says, "We weren't trying out ourselves." I add.

"What a shame. You two are naturals." Miss says smiling, "Really? Because I actually had so much fun doing it! And the part about the bunnies that 'wuv' each other? So cute!" Sarah says.

"I'll take that as a big yes. What about you dear?" Miss turns to me, "Uh.. I'm not one for the stage..." I reply, Miss frowns, "Oh you'll be fine!" She says.

I sigh, "If it's ok with Erica." I say, turning to her, she sighs and nods. Miss smiles, "Alright!".

We all turn around and start walking out, "Welcome aboard. Good luck acting like you can stand Sunday Clovers." Erica mumbles.

Right as she says that, Sunday skips by, singing.

"... I'm sure we'll be fine..." I say, still unsure.

*

I sit beside Benny, it's time for practise but I'm not on for a little bit so...

"I thought you had stage fright?" Benny asks, "I do... But you know... I thought it would be interesting to do this." I reply, "I may shit myself on the night though!" I add, causing a laugh from Benny.

"You'll be-" he's cut off from a loud thump. I turn to the stage and see a few bags falling, Benny and I look at each other confused, then we hear a scream and quickly run to stage.

"We need a doctor!" Ethan yells, I walk over to Erica and Sarah, "And an understudy!" Erica whispers.

Sarah and I look at her slightly horrified.

*

"Wait, can't vampires go all puppet master on the weak-minded?" Ethan asks, "You could have convinced her to hurt herself." He adds.

"Ugh, Glamouring is only something old and powerful vampires can do. So what did you do?" Sarah asks, "Nothing! That Aussie punk is as mad as a cut snake. She freaked out on me earlier. Told me to 'stay out of her mirror.' If I was going to break her legs, I'd have done it then." Erica says.

"She's telling the truth." I say, "Thank you. Now, your star has likes to learn. We open tomorrow! No time to yabber like a dill." Erica says.

I raise an eyebrow, "I think you're spending a little too much time as Sunday's understudy." I say, "Ah, she's apples! Now, on your bike before I go Argo on her bakehole!" Erica says, walking off.

"Ok... She's insane." I claim. Sarah laughs and nods, "Can someone explain to me why I agreed to be apart of this dumbass play?" I ask as we begin to start walking again.

"Because you want to be in it?" Ethan asks, "Trust me. I don't... I have stage fright. But alas. I agreed..." I mumble annoyed.

*

I sit in the drama room, waiting for my part as Erica and Sarah practise the start, "It's morning for my feelings! Rainbeam, where are you?" Erica asks.

"Look to the sky, Sundrop. Where happiness spreads her wings!" Sarah says, starting to float up, she laughs, "Get it?" She asks. I laugh and nod.

"Don't upstage me. Ever. Or else." Erica says darkly. Sarah and I look at each other then quickly follow Erica, after Sarah floated back to the ground.

"Or else what?" I ask, barging into where Erica went. "What's wrong with you? I was just playing." Sarah says.

My eyes widen as I realise Erica has a reflection. "This is my show. Mine. No one else can have it." Erica says, banging her hand on the table.

"Your show? You're sounding just as bad as Sunday. Look at yourself!" Sarah says, "She can, Sarah. She can look at herself. She has a reflection!" I yell, Erica turns her head and gets out of her chair.

She hisses at us then runs over to us, "Stay out of my mirror. Stay out of my way." She says, running back to her chair.

I quickly grab Sarah's hand, "Let's go."

Fun fact: I also have stage fright!
Another fun fact: my friend wants me to do a play with her and it's on Thursday, I don't know any of my lines and it's Saturday!
