Okay, just gotta get twenty feet to the front doors and I'll be safe, maybe.
There were hallways to either side of the front doors, nearly invisible from the angle I was at in the library doorway. The possibilities that Alyssa and her posse were lingering there was incredibly high.
The main reason I was hiding from these girls was because they bullied me for hearing more than just one voice. Ever since I was young I've always heard two voices in my head, Asher and Harlan. My parents decided one must've been fake and took me to see specialists who tried diagnosing me with schizophrenia, but they could never find any other symptoms other than the extra voice. There was of course stories of people who had multiple soulmates, but such things are considered "taboo," and "freakish."
Asher: I think you should make a break for it before the hags come looking for you.
Harlan: What if they're waiting for her? I think you should scout it out a little more.
Asher: Idiot, she should bolt, Izaak should be here by now, she'll be safe. You've got this baby!
Harlan: And if he's late? That's happened before and then it'll just make it all the worse.
I breathe out a sigh and rub my aching head. I swear, they couldn't go ten minutes without arguing, it was really wearing on my nerves. Fuck it, I'm going with Asher's idea. with that I was off; twenty feet, fifteen, ten, five.
"Where you heading off to freak? Gonna go whore it up with that empty-headed loser? God, you make me sick." Hands ripped me away from my only chance at freedom, harshly throwing me to the floor. My shoulders took the brunt of my fall and they were throbbing painfully.
Harlan: Honey, come on, stand up, show those bigots who's stronger.
Asher: Fuck baby I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.
I force myself to stand, wincing as the movement tugs at my aching shoulder muscles. "I believe we've spoken about this, Alyssa. Just cause you're a jealous bitch doesn't mean you have to take it out on me. Now if you'll kindly..." My words were silenced as she slapped me. It didn't particularly hurt, but it did its job of silencing me.
"Listen here, freak, I am not jealous of you. I'm sickened by you." Her voice was a low hiss of malice.
She raised her hand to strike me again, when the front doors creaked open and a disheveled guy in purple scrubs walked in. He looked between us, his face twisted with confusion and sadness; his whole body tensed as if waiting for her to attack him too. "Violence is never the answer, maybe try talking? I find that talking things out is wonderfully calming." He smiled hopefully and looked between us beseechingly. Alyssa sneered and pushed past him and through the doors, muttering darkly under her breathe.
He sighed sadly and his whole body sagged in relief. "I thought I'd have to physically diffuse the situation." He muttered, wringing his hands nervously.
Asher: Coward.
Shut up Asher, he doesn't like violence.
Asher: Well he needs to get used to it, this world is a violent place.
Harlan: Asher that's enough, I think...
I know Asher, I'm quiet aware just how violent the world can be.
They went silent and I was grateful for it, feeling only slightly guilty for dredging up such dark words. I closed off our connection, not able to handle anymore of their bickering for the time being.
"Come on Izaak, I just wanna go home and sleep. I made you some brownies last night after you left for your shift." I make my way to his side, tugging lightly on the sleeve of his scrubs. I let him lead me out to his Harley, a 1996 Fatboy. I love this bike, almost as much as Izaak does. I climb up behind him, and we're off. He swerves around slow cars, growling under his breathe every time a honk sounds behind us.
Alyssa's words bothered me and I really wish they didn't. Izaak was considered to be "empty headed," because he didn't have a voice in his head. There are tons of theories, but it seemed many just wanted to consider him broken, like me.
Asher: We aren't broken.
Harlan: We are as we are meant to be.
It would've been easier for you two if I wasn't here though, you would be normal. Didn't I tell you not to intrude when I close my thoughts? It's rude.
They didn't answer me and I rolled my eyes in exasperation. Honestly those two could be such pains. We made it back to our shared apartment in no time at all. It was a simple little place; two bed, one bath, a kitchen, living room, and a small coat closet. Izaak immediately headed for the kitchen and the pan of brownies that were resting on the stove.
"Are they special? cause I really want some special stuff." He grinned at me as he stuffed an entire brownie in his mouth, not even waiting for an answer.
"I did put some orange in there, and a bit of brandy." I smirk triumphantly when he shoved another one in his mouth, barely stopping to breathe. I leave him to the pan and head for my room, not even bothering to change out of my clothes before I flop on top of the covers.
Imma nap, night night guys.
Asher: Please tell us how to find you baby, we want you.
You're better off without me, I thought back sleepily, before succumbing to unconsciousness.
