You had just moved into your own apartment at the end of the summer, new city, new job, new routine, almost new everything except you hadn't quite made many new friends yet. You had your co-workers and that was pretty much it for your social life.
It had been months since you moved, and it was getting closer to being Christmas. Snow on the ground, the cities little shops and main attractions all decorated festively as you roamed the streets after getting yourself a coffee at a nearby shop.
You noticed a little sign hanging on a street pole, having seen it before on other streets. It was a cute, green piece of cardboard, cut out in the shape of a tree, painted on bulbs and lights. "Come to the Irwin tree farm for the perfect Christmas tree!" you read, "Big or small, we've got them all! Free hot chocolate and cookies too!" there was an address at the bottom, and hours of its operation. It was a short drive out of the city, you snapped a quick picture of the poster to keep for later.
You didn't actually consider getting a tree, you knew you'd be spending Christmas alone since your family was too far to visit and money was tight. The most festive thing you thought you'd be doing was maybe attending the Christmas party your work was throwing.
You headed back home for the rest of the evening, contemplating whether or not you should decorate. There was a thrift store a block over, you knew they would have cheap lights and ornaments if you got yourself a tree. You decided that you'd visit the thrift store and the little tree farm that seemed incredibly inviting, tomorrow afternoon.
The next day.
The drive to the little farm wasn't far at all, only about 20 minutes outside of the city. You followed the signs along the road even though you had the address punched into your gps, you drove down a little gravel road that was open with fields on either side, snow blanketing the ground causing a bright glow from the afternoon sun. It was more beautiful than the city.
The open fields didn't last long however, perfect rows of pine trees all lined up neatly in order, all different shapes and sizes. You parked along the road where other vehicles were lined up, some families carrying a tree to the car, boys trying to tie the tree to the roof, kids having a snowball fight while their parents fought with pine needles stuck to their coats. You already could tell that you would be leaving here happy, everyone around seemed to have a lightness to their expressions. Hopping out of your car, putting on your favourite beanie and matching gloves, you headed to the front entrance.
You smiled to people who were passing by, dodging kids who were running around in the open lot that seemed to have a few crafted snowmen built. A taller boy, dirty blonde curls peaking from his dark blue beanie, stood at a nearby table with a sign that said "Got questions? Ask Ash!"
The boy seemed quite young, in his 20's for sure by the height and little bit of scruff coming in on his face. You took notice of his large, plaid flannel jacket snugged tightly over his black pull over hoodie. You walked over to the table, your shyness just barely letting you get a word out. He seemed to be busy, jotting down a few things on a paper. You took a deep breath, and stood in front of the table.
