Military! Ashton hadn't sent you a letter in almost 4 months, his location was unknown and your heart slowly breaking as you had no real clue if your fiancé was alive or not. No family, or friends had heard from him either. No one could get a hold of him or the head office to find out where your husband-to-be had gone. It made it hard to sleep, and even harder to wake up if you slept, not knowing if you'll get a knock on the door one day with a man in a uniform holding the flag and pendants your fiancé wore so proudly throughout his on and off services.

Today however, had been the hardest. Hearing on the news about some very large attack happening in the last location you heard from Ashton- it was almost impossible not to listen to the news reporters say how many estimated people were killed, and how they were unsure just how many of them were soldiers. Watching the tv, and turning up the volume as the lady had given more and more information, you didn't even realize that you were watching the whole segment for almost the entire day- even if it was just repeating itself.

Your heart began to beat harder and break however when the reported confirmed 4 men dead on duty, unsure of identities at the moment as they would have to contact family before making it public. You knew that Ashton was in that placement the last time you talked to him via letters, and your body went into over drive as you worried why it had taken him so long to write back.

You tried everything to get in touch somehow, but nothing would work. He was across the world in a secret location and you were left in the dark, his family had no choice but to carry on with their days, Lauren and Harry having to go to school everyday wondering when Ashton would be home again to play video games with them. You felt completely pathetic for nearly dropping everything the last month, not leaving your shared house (that got much colder as the days passed) and hardly having human interaction.

When a knock on the door echoed through the house, your heart lept into your throat. You dreaded the knock- knowing they never use a doorbell- it never failed to put you on edge. Creeping your way up, you slid the chain lock off the door and opened it slowly. Eyes on the ground at first, noticing the shiny black shoes with dark blue slacks hanging just an inch off the ground. You almost  didn't dare look up, scanning the frame in front of you- nothing but the uniform of a well dressed man holding his cap with his arms crossed on his front.

You looked up, notching a familiar band on the mans finger- you nearly fell to the ground then and there. A boy with a shaggy hair cut and dimpled smile was grinning at you, and you couldn't believe your eyes- and couldn't control the words that came out next,

"I thought you were fucking dead!" You practically shouted, tears pooling down your face as Ashton's hands made their way to each cheeks.

"I thought I was too, that's why I left. My time was over done anyway, they didn't need me anymore and I didn't need the risk" He said, his voice hoarse and tired. The bright eyed boy you loved so much, still had a little glow behind the dark bags,  scruffy beard and scarred up temple from when he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"You're home, oh my god you're actually home!" You said, holding his hands that were still resting on your cheeks. He brought you in closer, kissing your forehead before taking you into a massive bear hug.

"The TV! they said 4 men were dead, it was at the last location you were in" You said breathlessly as your face was pressed against his chest. Ashton sighed heavily.

"I know. I was flown out a day before that, I couldn't write while I was there. But the one man who died, he was my buddy." He said sadly, and your heart dropped.

"Come inside babe, let's get you into some comfortable clothes with some good food and we can talk. I missed you so god damn much Ashton" You said, tugging his hand and helping him with his bag to come inside.
You spent that night eating his favourite take out, hearing happy stories of his friends he had made and lost, and showed off his new badges and pins.
