You were so, so angry and upset. Of all the days to be stood up, it had to be Christmas eve. Your day was already quite shit, your morning coffee was made wrong by the moody barista, your new boots were already stained and ruined from salt, construction was happening in your building, and now you had just been stood up at the local outdoor ice rink on Christmas eve.

It was the 5th date you and your online-80%match-boyfriend material-man-dude-friend-Jack had planned, yet here you were.

Sitting at one of the benches, skates on, no Jack in sight. It's been almost 45 minutes, you wanted to leave but didn't particularly want to go back to your cold apartment and sulk.

Feeling a little embarrassed, you untied your skates and headed for the little food & drink booth that was selling warm cups of hot chocolate, tea and coffee as well as fresh donuts and cookies.

You bought yourself a large hot chocolate with whip cream and 2 chocolate chunk cookies because doesn't everyone who's been stood up on Christmas eve treat themselves?

Making your way back over to the bench, you shrugged sadly over to the boy running the counter that rented skates.

He had been watching you most of the night, crossing his fingers in the distance towards you, silently saying 'don't worry! he'd be stupid not to show up!' except, your phone dinged with a text and you sighed heavily.

Can't make it, my sister is sick.

Jack was an only child, so of course this was just some bullshit. You shoved your phone into your pocket, not bothering with replying to him.

You gathered up your small backpack with your cookies inside, hot chocolate in one hand and rented skates in the other and made your way over to the boy behind the counter.

The boy looked at you, a sad smile on his face as he saw you drop the skates onto the counter. "No show?" he asked, you laughed awkwardly and nodded.

"Said his sisters sick...He's an only child." You explained, the boy let out a low whistle in disappointment. He held up a finger, indicating you wait a minute.

He rushed over to where the drink booth was, talked to some other guy and they both made their way back over. The boy, who had been silently praying for you all night was shoving on a beanie and a sweater over top of his long sleeve shirt.

"I'm Calum, by the way." He said, grabbing a pair of hockey skates off the shelf and slinging them over his shoulder. His co-worker shoved your skates towards you and smiled.

"Oh, no thank you-"

"None of that, you came here to skate yeah?" You nodded to Calum.  "You any good?" You laughed a little, shaking your head and tipping your hand side to side as if saying 'ehhhh kind of, but not really' Calum only beamed and walked out from behind the counter and towards you.

"Calum, you really don't have to. I should just go home anyway, this whole day has been a complete bust." You said, you couldn't help the twinge of sadness that came out of your voice. Calum offered you a sweet, soft smile and grabbed your skates for you.

"Please, for the past 45 minutes i've been thinking of what to say to the dickhead if he showed up late." Calum scoffed, you both sat on the bench and began tying up your skates.
