You and Calum had known each other back in elementary school, you weren't incredibly close but you two would always be polite to each other or hang out with the same group of friends.
You went to different high schools though, only seeing him at the occasional party or two. So you were surprised when you saw him at the same university as you, taking the same journalism class. It was the second term of the year, and you hadn't seen him anywhere on campus until now.
He obviously looked way different than before, he was taller, more built in the shoulders, he still wore his skinny jeans and t-shirts like he did at the parties, and his hair was now grow. out from his Mohawk and kept in tame curls. He even had a few tattoos. You couldn't even believe it was the Calum you knew as kids. He was carrying a dark green binder, a gym bag over his shoulders and a coffee in hand as well.
You didn't think he would even notice you in the class, it was quite a packed one. But, as he scanned for a seat as everyone was on the first day back, he did a double take at you. A smile on his face and a little wave made you giggle. You waved back, shocked that he remembered you. You ducked your head down, suddenly shy as you wandered to find a seat.
You took a seat at a desk to the far left of the class, a seat free on the right side of you. You knew a few people in this class, but not enough to decide to sit by them for the rest of the term. You pulled out your books, placing your thermos of coffee on the corner of the desk, prepared for the class you've been most excited for.
You looked up as a shadow stood in front of you, tapping on the desk to your right.
"May I?" Calum asked, and you nodded.
"Sure, yeah. I don't have any friends." You said, cringing at yourself for completely fucking up your wording. Calum giggled, sitting down and then raising an eyebrow at you.
"Friendless? That doesn't sound like the y/n I used to know!" He teased. He was right, you were good at making friends.
You shoved his shoulder like you used to in elementary school."I didn't mean it like that! I just meant I don't have friends in the class." You explained, calum nodded smugly and you rolled your eyes.
"What's with the gym bag?" You asked, and Calum smiled. It was still bright like you remembered it to be.
"I got a scholarship for the soccer team here, but I didn't want the free ride completely and really got into being an academic student too so here I am. Kinda cool actually, I mean - Sorry. Rambling." He said, taking a sip of his coffee and tapping his pencil on the desk.
"No worries, I asked the question for a reason, I was gonna ask why you were in this class anyway but I guess that explains it too then?" You said, smiling and scribbling the date down into your notebook.
"Y-yeah. Kind of a shocker isn't it? Soccer athlete taking journalism? Not the usual duo of you ask me, or anyone else." He laughed nervously. You almost seemed embarrassed all of sudden, but you offered him a smile.
"Hey, nothing wrong with it. If you like it, then who gives a shit right?" You said, and Calum laughed.
"Jesus! Swearing too now? Where's y/n ?? Where did she go?" He asked, jokingly looking behind you and at your side as if looking for someone else.
"Oh shut up! So I assume you're staying on campus then right?" You asked and he shrugged shyly.
"Not quite, I work at the little cafe a couple blocks away to pay for my tiny apartment. I didn't have a roommate, well not one id like to have so I had to wing it all first term." Calum said, and you have him a satisfied nod and another nudge to the shoulder
"Look at you go! Apartment, scholarship, jobs, what next? You a star academics student too?" You asked and he blushed and nodded. You smiled widely.
"Cal! that's so good! Your parents have got to be proud, right?" You asked. Remembering the few times you had met them when hanging out with the same group of friends, they were always so kind to anyone they met.
"Completely proud, it feels good. I gave them so much hell through high school with all the parties and shit. They'd be even happier knowing you're here too, they actually asked about you a while back." He admitted.
"They always liked you, a lot. And I had like the biggest crush on you so they never let that die." He said, immediately covering his face with his hands.
"Ah- shit. Yep, was not supposed to get that deep." He rambled and your heart fluttered.
You had no idea he had a crush on you back then, you always thought Calum was a cutie, but the parties took over and your friendship died out."Well that's news to me, what a shame." Was all you could think of saying, sipping your coffee as the teacher walked in.
You and Calum stayed quiet the rest of class, awkwardly looking at each other and blushing like idiots. Class ended, Calum and you had said quick goodbyes as he rushed off to practice and you went to your second class. As you gathered your notes, a loose paper slipped out from your binder.
Meet me at the cafe on 44th at 7? I don't work tonight and would love to catch up. Here's my number incase you think of something else exciting to do, I'm boring.
You knew it was Calum who had left it, you sent him a text saying "I'll be there :)" .Later that evening, both of you arrived at the cafe in sweat pants and comfortable shirts, Calum had a plate of cookies already set on the table and was reading a book when you walked in.
The book was put away the minute he saw you and for the next 3 hours you two talked about everything that has happened since the last time you spoke. The cookies were gone, warm drinks were cold with how much you two were talking and the store was closing and you two hadn't even realized it.
"I can walk you back to campus if you'd like?" Calum offered and you agreed.
Every night after that, times were set up for cafe meet - ups and homework sessions that ended up just being at Calums small and cozy apartment. You attended as many games and practices as you could, with him insisting you were 'brought to him again for a reason' he was hell bent on having you
there as much as possible for luck.
