Military! Luke being nervous as his plane landed, still dressed in his uniform and slightly terrified that you wouldn't be there to meet him- which he knew was absolutely unnecessary since you two had been childhood friends and when he talked about going to the military at 12 years old, you swore to him you'd be there when he'd come home. Both of you being in your twenties, Luke had been gone for almost 3 years now. Only being able to fly home once in that time, and that was only in the first year. You hadn't seen him, only occasional letters since you were picking up a few university classes and he was busy being your far away hero from childhood.
Luke was particularly nervous about this because he had it all planned out for when he came home, he swore to himself that if you kept your promise of being the one to meet him at the airport- He'd be determined to make a promise to you for life. With nothing but his backpack and self consciousness he stepped off the plane, went through customs and received many claps and thank you's as he passed everyday people. However, everything seemed to go in slow motion as he stepped out of the terminal, looking for the familiar face and his heart sinking when he couldn't find it. Until a quiet- nervous voice spoke from behind him.
"Welcome home, hero." You said quietly, Lukes heart sped up as your familiar voice made everything else around him go silent.
Setting his bag down, he turned to face you. Taking off his hat and immediately noticing your tear brimmed eyes, he never swooped his arms around your waist so quick in his life. Lifting your smaller frame off the ground as your limbs clung to him as if he'd disappear like dust into thing air if you didn't hold tight enough. People clapping nearby made the two of you laugh lightly, sniffling as you shoved your faces into each other's necks.
"You kept your promise. You really did" He mumbled, getting choked up as a realized that his decision was completely made.
You slowly touched the ground again, placing your hands onto his chest and looking up at him like your entire world just came back to life.
"Can I promise you something, then?" He asked, his voice a little shaky and hands grabbing yours. You nodded easily, you secretly had been waiting for the day your friendship would take off into much more.
"I'm not asking you to marry me, I'm not asking you to dive into some life bond with me or to run off with me into the middle of nowhere. I'm not asking you anything, actually. I'm promising you.. I'm promising you that no matter where I go, what I do, who I meet... It'll always be you that I want to be welcomed back by, I accompanied with, giving me advice. I promise you I can love you twice as much as I did when we were kids, three times as much as I did when we were teens and if you let me, I'll fucking fall in love with you more than I did when I was away." He said, the words rushed, nervous, happy and relieved all at once.
You didn't hesitate to cling back onto Luke, your arms clutching around his neck as you nodded into his shoulder. You didn't need to say much, you could both feel the certainty in the air that this was only another beginning for the two of you- even if it wasn't a proposal or moving in or something huge. It just meant you could finally tell the boy you've loved since you were little- that you loved him, every night before bed, without it sounding platonic.
