Amberley

My heart was so cold, I was numb all over. It shouldn't have been that easy! It was just so simple to strangle the life out of my father, it felt so right.

It had been so easy to let go, to let my darkness rise within me and snuff out the light. I was a monster and now Evan knew it. He had left me as soon as we landed.

I had seen the look on his face when he had dragged me into the elevator. I had seen him run away as soon as we landed. He hated me. I had ruined everything.

My body was taught like a wire. I had to release or I would blow up Clandestine into bits. I practically sprinted to the power room.

Luckily, there was no one to be seen. I locked the door behind me and barely had time to turn before I released a bloodcurdling scream that sent power blasting from every pore of my body.

I kept screaming and my power kept surging until my knees collapsed and my voice turned hoarse. I slammed my fist on the ground.

"Mother. Why would you leave me alone with him? He would have been a good father if you were there. Maybe I wouldn't have had to kill him."

Sobs took over my body as I spoke to no one. No one answered but it felt good to express my feelings with words.

"You should of been there! I killed him, I'm a monster!"

My head banged on the ground as I pressed my forehead to the matted ground. I couldn't live like this anymore.

"The world makes monsters of us all my dear," a voice calls.

My head snaps up and I scan for the voice. My eyes land of Samara who seemed to have slipped into the room without anyone noticing.

"Because we let it!" I growl, suddenly furious at her presence.

"Then don't. Don't let it, little girl and see what happens. This isn't like any fairytale you've ever heard. The monsters always win," she said.

I furrowed my eyebrows and blew air out of my nose. How dare she? Of course she didn't believe in me! She never did.

"Then I'll find a monster to win for me."

She only smiled at that. "Oh but you already have."

I surged forward and leaned down to her height. "Evan isn't a monster and he isn't an enemy."

"How do you know? Do you know anything about him besides his name? Does anyone?"

I kept my mouth closed but was convinced that steam was billowing from my ears.

"Then who is he?"

"That's up for you to find out, little princess," Alvar said before walking out the room, sidestepping the ruin I had caused. She muttered under her breath.

I sighed and fell back into the mat once again. I was I supposed to win a war if I couldn't even convince a little old lady of Evan's loyalty?

"Amberley, I'm sorry to interrupt," a second voice called.

I sighed and stood, taking in Joshua's rugged state. He looked like he hadn't slept in days but then again have any of us?

"What's wrong Joshua?"

"Maybe it's best if you come to my office so we can talk in private."

I nodded and followed Joshua out of the power room and into Clandestine's halls. They were bustling as the Altrus prepared for war.

We arrived at Joshua's without interruption and he opened the door for me with a sad smile. Something was seriously wrong.

I sat down in the office chair as Joshua sat down in his. He regarded me before pulling a parchment out of his drawer and sliding it towards me.
