Chapter 19

Time skip to Christmas time (Because nothing happens during that time period really)

still Emma's POV btw

I looked at the large pine tree with pride. I had found the perfect tree in the forest that we could decorate. The only issue is that I don't know how to get it home. This had been a very snowy winter season so there was at least a good foot of snow around me. I heard the snow crunching behind me and saw Kathryn walking towards me wearing a purple winter coat and black snow boots. She smiled and noticed the tree. "You planing on taking that tree home Frostbite?" I nodded. "Ya but I'm not sure how to get it back to the house though." I pouted like a child. Kathryn smiled and laughed a bit. "Come on. I'll get some help." I gave her a curious look but followed her as she walked through the forest in a different direction than usual. We walked for a few minutes until we came upon a small homemade little shack. It had a bunch of fenced in pens around the back of it and as soon as we neared i I heard a bunch of loud barks for what sounded like dogs.

Kathryn walked up the the door and unlocked it with a key from under the doormat. I followed slightly behind her. Inside it was surprisingly warm. The minute that I walked in though, I was nearly tackled by a bunch of puppies. I gave them all a few pats and looked around. The inside was a good size and there was a bunch of kittens and cats inside along with the puppies. "What is this place Kathryn?" I asked and she chuckled a bit. "This place is where my pets live. I guess that you could call it a type of shelter for stray animals. Come on, I'll take you to meet the older ones." She said that and gestured for me to follow her. I did. She opened the back door and revealed a large backyard with tons of dogs and a few cats with thick fur. I noticed that there was a large dog door built into the back door.

I looked around the fenced in yard. There was a ton of different breeds of dogs. Kathryn pulled out a dog whistle from her pocket and blew it. All of the dog's' ears perked up and they all arranged into three lines. "Wow Kathryn! How'd you train them to do that?!" She shrugged. "A LOT of training and dog cookies." She replied with a smile. She walked up to a group of about seven huskies and petted the largest one's head. I assumed that it was a male because he was bigger than the rest of them. He was also a different color than usual. He was white with black paws and a black spot of fur around his left eye.

"This is Buddy." Kathryn said as she petted the dog's head. "He is my lead sled dog and my best stud for breeding." I nodded and then asked "You breed your dogs?" She smiled kind of sheepishly and said "Well, technically I don't breed them. However since unless I find them after they've been either spayed or neutered, I just let them do their own thing. How do you think I keep on getting puppies?" I shrugged. "Come on Buddy!" Kathryn said to the dog and him and the rest of the huskies stood up and followed her while wagging their tails happily. "It's been a little while since the last time I've taken them sledding so they're pretty excited." Kathryn said as she opened up a small shed and pulled out a dog sled with seven harnesses attached to it. She blew her whistle again and the other dogs went back to whatever they were doing before. Kathryn hooked up all seven dogs to the sled and the grabbed some rope to tie the tree to the sled and got the sled ready to go. "Oh Emma, I guess that I should introduce you to the rest of the dogs." Kathryn said once she was all set to go.

"The two dogs closest to the sled are Lucy and Natsu." (NaLu for life! see what I did there?) Lucy was a very light brown almost blonde color and Natsu was normal colored dark grey and white but he had a small patch of pink fur in the to of his head in between his ears. "What's up with the pink?" I asked Kathryn as I gave him a pat on the head. "When he was a baby he accidentally got some kind of dye on his head and it never came out so I decided to name him Natsu. The next two dogs are Luna and Sparks, they're twins." Kathryn said as she pointed to two dogs. Luna was normal colored but had icy blue eyes and Sparks was black and white and the tips of both of his ears were a golden color. Sparks also had yellow eyes and the tip of his tail was golden as well.

"The last two are Scout and Racer and you already know Buddy at the very front." Kathryn said as she introduced me to the last two dogs. Scout was brown and white with brown eyes and Racer was dark grey and white. "Okay Emma that's all of them. Are you ready to go?" Kathryn asked as she got on the sled. "Ya but where do I go?" Kathryn whistled and the dogs all moved forward and a gate opened. "Come on!" Kathryn shouted to me and I followed her out. Outside there was a large chestnut colored horse with a black mane and tail. She snorted and trotted up to me. "That's Penny. You can ride her so that you can keep up with my dogs." Kathryn said. I nodded and got up on Penny. I felt so high up as I sat up on her. I positioned my feet in the stirrups and held onto the reins. I clicked my tongue and squeezed Penny's sides with my legs urging her forward. Kathryn said "Come on guys lets go!" to her dogs and they all began to sprint forward pulling the sled over the snow with ease. Penny eagerly went into a canter and soon had to go into a gallop to keep up with Kathryn.

Soon enough we reached the tree again and Kathryn stopped the dogs while I got off Penny. "So how exactly are we supposed chop this thing down?" I asked Kathryn. She smirked and pointed to me. "What?!" I asked surprised. "You can use you ice powers to freeze part of the trunk until it is so cold that it shatters." Kathryn said simply. "Okay I guess that it's worth a shot." I said and walked over to the tree. I dug through the snow a bit and began to freeze the trunk in a small section. I used a ton of power as fast as I could and suddenly the trunk shattered like glass in that spot. It fell over and Kathryn walked over to it. "Good job." She said and put a hand on my shoulder giving me a look of pride. "You've come a long way with your powers now come help me hook that up to the sled."

time skip

Once we got back to the house we set up the tree and decorated it. It was Christmas eve and it was late at night now so I got into bed. Normally we don't get many presents on Christmas so in a way the tree is our gift to each other. We also make an ornament for each year we are together as a hunter group and this year it is my turn to hang it on the tree. I can't wait until morning.

I woke up and stretched with a yawn. I got up and walked out into the hallway. Downstairs I couldn't hear anything and I noticed that Kathryn was sitting at the top of the stairs. "Ah Emma, I see you're finally up. Go to Chloe's room. I want everyone to meet there. We are just waiting for Eleanor to get up." I wonder why Kathryn wants us all to meet in Chloe's room. I walked in there and noticed that everyone else was quietly talking to each other trying to determine what's going on. It was a few minutes before Eleanor walked in. "Hey guys, Kathryn says that we all have to come downstairs now." She said sleepily. Eleanor's not much of a morning person.

When we got down we all gasped. Instead of seeing what we usually saw on Christmas morning we saw a ton of presents under the tree and around it. Kathryn stood in front of it and I could tell that she stayed up all night doing this. Merry Christmas guys." Kathryn said. We all hugged her and then went to open our presents. Best Christmas ever!
