I wake up with puffy eyes and notice the mess I made in my room. Rolling out of bed I remember what happened. Maybe I over reacted a little.
Oh who am I kidding? I definitely over reacted.
Since is still early I decide to clean a bit. I start by throwing away anything that's broken and can't be saved. Then I put everything I'm going to have to fix in a box for later. Lastly I put everything back in its original place.
Now I get dressed as quickly as I can, grab a small breakfast since I'm still doozy from last night, and rush to school dodging street venders and fellow pedestrians along the way.
As soon as I enter rush to the spot where we always meet up and no one else is here. Or so I thought.
"Farkle Minkus!" Maya yells as she charges towards me.
I gulp and quickly think of what I can say to calm her down. I guess that's the truth.
I step forward and put my hands up in surrender right before she can do anything as I say, "I know I just lost one of the best things that's ever happened to me and that I don't deserve to have her back. I know that she deserves the world and lately I've been treating her like total crap, but that doesn't mean I don't love her. That I won't stop fighting for her no matter how much we fight. That I'm going to just give up on her, on us. God I think I rather die alone than be without her! I messed up and I know that I did, I just need to get my head in straight to make it up to her... if that's even possible."
I drop my bag and slide to the floor leaning against the lockers. My head gets thrown back in defeat as I realize how impossible this is going to be.
Maya kneels in front of me and it's her hands on my shoulders. My sad blue eyes meet hers to see that she's just as upset as me. Her face shows the sympathy that I don't really need right now, but am going to get anyway.
"Look," she states, "I don't care if you don't know how you're going to make it up to her, just do it. But right now she won't leave her room and I know that you're the only one that can get her out of there."
I look down and think about it. "What if she just wants space right now?" I ask.
The best friend just shrugs. "Maybe she does, but maybe she doesn't. Just try and if she gets mad at you, you can say I sent you."
I nod and figure that I have to do this. "I'll go right now. Thanks Maya."
"What are childhood best friends for?" she tells me with a small smile.
I smile and then rush out of school. I run through the streets barely missing people and make it to my destination. Bounding up the steps I take a deep breath and think about what to say. The only think I need to say for sure is I'm sorry.
I open the window and see that Riley is laying in bed with her back to me. I call out, "May I come in?"
A pause.
She doesn't turn my way but says, "Go ahead."
I enter and sit in the bay window. All I can do is think about how this is my fault. I'm about to say just that when she turns to me.
The first thing I notice is he bags under her eyes and the puffiness to them. She looks like she cried all night.
Riley takes a deep breath then surprises me with, "I'm sorry for all the fighting. I know that you'll probably never forgive me and that I don't deserve you, but I need you to know that I truly am sorry."
I go over to her bed and look into her brown eyes. The usual sparkles it holds is dimmed. It now holds a sadness and slight hope. I just stand by her bed out of fear and tell her, "You have nothing to be sorry for. This is my fault. I shouldn't have taken out my stress about the future on you. I'm sorry for making you think otherwise, but this isn't on you, okay?"
That's when the sparkle slowly comes back to her eyes. "Come here," she says.
I do as she says and we lay there cuddling for a long moment. We don't need words to know that we're both sorry and that we both love each other too much to lose the other. She's my everything and think I just got her back.
"I love you," I mumble into her hair.
"I love you more," she teases.
I laugh. "Well I love you to Pluto and back."
And with that I win not only that mini game, but I won my girls heart back.
