We Who Aspire

8 1 2

We who dodge the sunlight
build sunbeams just the same
We who wander from our homes
build hearths in castle halls
We who tear down effigies
and turn to build these walls

We hypocrites run from love
and desire its embrace
We break a hundred mirrors
and look for ourselves
in someone else's face

Are we truly duty bound
to bear the burdens
of all we've found
if those burdens
are they same they bore
coming before
to lay them down
at our feet?

We are no different
than all we decry
no matter the struggle
or the reasons why
They were no less human
than you or I

So stop
and look for real
and heal
this bitter
this foul
this festering
somehow

Or will we who aspire
burn up in that same fire
we set to destroy
the dreams we
didn't believe?
