Bedroom/Dan Tyrell's Private apartment/human zone/Greenzone/Adram-spaceport base.
Catz looked over to Dan sleeping on the other side of the bed. She slid to the side and put her feet on the floor. This was bad. The closer she had got to Dan the more they had just felt natural together. She had prompted him about previous Martian girl friends on Earth and he had admitted to having dated the odd one. Not the huge romance that Scarlett had painted. She sometimes wondered if this was the same man. Scarlett had been convinced they had brainwashed him. For Catz, Dan was a classic Bentham supporter, her robot said brainwashing couldn't be done. So what was happening? Scarlett had hated him for a long time - said Dante was a player. Perhaps Dan/Dante had just played Scarlett pretend to be someone else just for a bet or something?
Catz looked back at Dan and began to feel swelling in her eyes. She beat her knee with her fist. She told herself she was just pretending to like him. She told herself she was a spy. Everything she did was for the Eye and only for the Eye. Dan formally Dante was Scarlett's. No She was on a mission. She had told Scarlett about the train and that had saved many lives. There was a massive robot legion being sent north The base had been totally freaked out when that had happened so it must have been good. She was pretending to like him. She didn't feel anything for him. She was on a mission. OK If she was a spy, Catz told herself, why didn't she mention the nuclear bombs? It was absurd wasn't it? It was clearly a test. The machines were using fake rumors to find the leak and so her. The new robot general was clearly more suspicious. It shouldn't matter if Dan was found out, but she was preserving herself.
Catz steeled herself, she was going to look at Dan and imagine cutting his throat. She closed her eyes and try to picture the act in her mind. Taking a knife in the dead of a sleepless night. Then stabbing him. She opened her eyes and turned around but when she looked she knew she couldn't. She turned back. She had never been so sure of a boy before. What could she say? She wished she could flee with him to the deep desert. Find an old lab out there and just live together. Just them. No Earth, No Mars. No flags just people. Happy people living together.
Her heart felt like it was turning to glass. Could she betray her own best friend for him? Scarlett was still so desperately in love with him. Oh god, what had she become? Someone other than the robots was being a monster here. She looked again at Dan. The only way she could imagine him dead, was with herself dead beside him, slain by the same blade.
"You OK?" said a quiet voice from the sheets.
"Yeah I couldn't sleep," said Catz.
"Again? Come here I'll hold you" said Dan softly and invitingly.
Catz lay down. Who was she going to betray? Dan or Scarlett and the revolution?
