Chapter Six
Sang

The elevator doors open on the floor of the basement. I step out and walk down the hall, my eyes briefly scanning the few doors that I pass. Down here they tend to keep old hospital equipment and tools. Not many people come down here unless they need to.

Grandad Bernie had his office upstairs but he also had a room down here that he used to take naps in and sometimes had meetings with Grandad Ronnie and Grandad Joey. I just hope that it's still a room with a couple of couches, a desk that was barely used and box TV that barely worked.

I reach the door and twist the handle, hoping that it's still kept unlocked. I sigh with relief when it is and go inside. Closing the door behind me I look around the room.

I wish I could say that the new blue couches and the large round table with several chairs got my attention. I wish I could say that the window mural painted on the wall caught the apple of my eye. But I can't.

Instead I'm staring at a bare, muscular back of a man. His shoulders are tense with my entrance and his grey pants are loose around his waist. He's slightly bent over, near the desk by the couch, reaching for something, his muscles rippled and tense.

I gasp, stepping back as I catch the side profile of his face. I see the arm of glasses at his temple, curling around his ear, his woodsy brown hair cropped short at the back and sides and longer on top. His jaw is clean from stubble and his lips appear to be pressed into a thin line. I can only see his side profile. "I'm so sorry, I didn't realize someone was in here," I say, trying desperately to avert my eyes.

He doesn't say anything but his tensed muscles ripple and move as he grasps whatever it was he was reaching for. His arms move as he threads his arms through the sleeves of a crisp white shirt. He keeps his back to me as I assume he buttons it up and I'm a little disappointed. "This room is private."

The authority in his voice, the demanding tone takes me off guard, surprising me. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize that someone uses this room." I turn around and twist the handle of the door. "I'll go."

I look over my shoulder as I pull the door open and this time, I get a look at his face because he's looking right at me, his body slightly turned. Black framed glasses sit on his nose, his hair is perfectly combed and his eyes...they cause me to suck in a breath. Grey, a brilliant pearly, silver grey. And completely emotionless, not giving me a hint of what he's thinking. "Who are you?" He asks, the tone of his voice making me part my lips to answer.

He turns, tucking his crisp white shirt into his grey slacks, quickly buttons the pants up, and secures the belt buckle. I don't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing my name, especially because I have no idea who he is. "Nobody important," I murmured.

His eyes narrow and just with that look, a shiver goes down my spine. I look away but a photo on the wall near the door catches my attention. Four familiar faces stare back at me along with five I don't know—well, four because the handsome stranger that stands behind me is in the photo too. "This is Dr Green's space now?" I ask.

"Depends who's asking," he replies tersely.

I feel the sass kicking in. "Wouldn't you like to know?" I throw over my shoulder. "Have a good day, sir." I step out of the room and slam the door closed behind me.

I head back towards the elevator and press the button. When the doors open, I get in and press the button for the main floor. My keys are in my pocket and the mall isn't too far from here. I don't have any cash on me, but I could window shop.
