A/N: I know absolutely nothing about boats, just what I googled so I apologise if anything is as it shouldn't be. If you PM I will happily correct it. Thank you!
Her Last Wish
Chapter Twenty Four
Sang
(Friday)Thursday was spent at the hospital. After showering, dressing in sweats and a T-shirt, North happily drove me back to Nan. I was surprised when I found Uncle waiting at the entrance with a bag of food that I took from him with a smile when he handed it over to me. North had made the call for food and Uncle was all too happy to deliver.
I spent the day sitting with Nan, sometimes reading, sometimes scrolling through the pictures on my phone, sometimes just staring at the wall. Sean was all too happy to take me home that night after he finished his shift. I promised him I would try to get some sleep. Try was the keyword. I haven't slept a wink. I've stared at my ceiling all night wishing I wasn't alone. The clock reads four AM. I can't lay here any longer. I have to get up and do something. Anything.
I dress in a pair of shorts, a tank top and pull on a cardigan before making my way downstairs. I don't brush my hair, I don't even bother brushing my teeth. I just slide my feet into my sandals, grab my car keys and lock the door before jumping into my car and driving off.
I have no destination in mind. I just want to drive. I just want to move. I just want to go somewhere, anywhere, just away for a few hours. The roads are clear as I choose a direction. Music plays through the car's sound system. I don't sing along. I realise I didn't bring my phone. I don't stop until I reach The North Shore.
I park my car and get out. The sky is starting to lighten as a new day begins to dawn. I kick off my sandals when I reach the beach, leaving them there as my toes sink into the sand. I just walk and walk, watching the sky change colours as the sun slowly makes its way into the sky. I dip my toes into the cold water, walking the length of the beach before turning around and walking back. I repeat the process several times, walking past runners and dog walkers, photographers capturing a moment in time.
The whole time I think. I think about my Grandads, I think about Nan. I think about Dr. Roberts and Uncle. I think about the guys. How is it possible for so many things in my life to change so drastically in such a short amount of time? How can my life go from really good to totally shit? What did I ever do to deserve this? A Nan that's dying, and boys that I could easily fall in love with coming into my life at the wrong time.
A figure further up the beach brings me to a stop. I had wondered how long it would be until he finally made his presence known. I may have been lost in my head, but I was fully aware of my surroundings. I know when someone is watching me. My feet slowly take me to him, our eyes locked, both of us hesitant. I pull my cardigan around me, folding my arms over my chest as I come to a stop a few feet away from him. "You followed me?" I ask.
He shakes his head. "No. I was filling up at the gas station just off the highway. Saw your car go by."
"What were you doing here so early?"
Silas smiles. "Come. I'll show you." When he holds his hand out to me, I take it. I note he has my sandals in his hand. He doesn't offer them to me, even when he takes me up the path away from the beach and towards where I left my car. He's wearing flip flops, shorts and a fitted T-shirt, and he pulls a set of keys from his pocket, coming to a stop at a black Rover. "Hop inside," he says as he opens the passenger door.
I get in the car, murmuring my thanks and watch him round the car after closing my door. Once he's settled into the driver's seat and is pulling out of the parking spot, I ask, "Where are you taking me?"
