Chapter Nine
Sang
(Thursday)The next morning, I'm up as the sun starts to rise. I realized quickly that I was in Luke's room and that my stuff is still in here, so I dressed in a pair of jean shorts and a tank top with a flannel shirt over the top, pairing it up with some white converse. I chucked my hair into a messy bun and brushed my teeth in his bathroom.
The whole time I wondered how I got to bed.
The last thing I remembered was working on my iPad and listening to the boys chuckle at some comedy show on the TV, Luke's and Gabriel's laughs being the loudest.
I find my phone and decide to call the hospital. I'm not going to rush in this morning as I want to pop by the school and talk with Lorraine face to face. I also want to make sure that Silas and North have everything they need to fix the pipe.
A nurse answers the phone right away, and I tell her who I am and ask how Nan is doing. She's silent for a moment and I start to feel panic rise, wondering if something has happened. Especially when she covers the phone with her hand—I assume—and starts talking to someone who is not me.
A heartbeat later and a familiar voice comes down the line. "Sang, how are you?" Doctor Phil Roberts asks.
"Is Nan okay?" I ask.
"She's fine. I just asked the nurses to allow me to speak with you if you ever called. I just came from seeing Rose and I left her with those books of hers," he explains and my shoulders immediately sag.
"Right. Good. As long as she's alright," I tell him. "I just wanted to see how she was doing. I'm not going to be at the hospital until around eleven. I need to run some errands and go to work to talk with my boss."
"That's fine, Sang. I'm sure she's happy with reading her books."
"Of course she is, it's Christian Grey," I say with a roll of my eyes.
"Now young lady, have you actually read these books? I'm pretty fond of Ana Steele if I do say so myself," he laughs.
I groan, dropping my face into my hand. "Too much information, Doc."
"You're avoiding the question."
I laugh as I say, "You're right, I am." I take a breath. "I'll see you in a little while, Phil."
"See you soon, Sang."
I hang up the call and slip my phone into my pocket before grabbing my duffle bag and making my way downstairs. I find North and Silas in the kitchen. North is working at the stove and Silas is mixing something in a bowl. It looks like a pancake mix, but I can't be sure. "Good morning."
"Morning, Baby," North says with a grin.
"Morning, Aggele," Silas says at the same time.
I drop my bag in the corner of the room out of the way. "What are you cooking?" I ask, moving to stand at Silas' side.
"Pancakes," he says with a grin. "And bacon and eggs. Luke and Gabriel went to the store to get some OJ and chocolate chips."
"Chocolate chip pancakes?" I ask with a grin.
"Luke's favorite, much to North's displeasure." I laugh with Silas' chuckle, the sound overpowering North's grunt.
