Chapter 27 Devoted One
From the distance Kano watched his daughter fall for a complete stranger. He felt a strong sense of anger boil up inside of him.
How dare he lay his dirty hands on my daughter?!
Out of the blue Muta came forward and a bunch of flowers in her hand. She leaned over at his shoulder and lightly kissed his cheek.
"Let her go my dear. I believe in that man. His eyes tell his story, he may not look it but he does love her back." Muta said hugging her husband's waist.
Kano sighed and laid his hands on hers.
"My love, I'm not going to let history repeat itself. She's trusted people to easily and she was always the one who paid the consequence. I'm not going to let this malice world shatter our daughter."
Kano turned around and lifted his wife's face. He gently smiled and kissed her forehead. In return Muta got up on her toes and kissed his lips.
"Open up your heart. You're not looking at him properly." She patted his cheek and left without another word.
Kano turned his attention back to his daughter. The more he watched Levi, the more tensed he grew.
"Kano the Great, do you have a moment?" Erwin walked up to him with a cup of water in hand.
Kano took the cup and chugged it down. Both leaders sat down on a log and stared up at the sky.
"How's Cheoki doing?" Erwin said trying to start a conversation.
"Fine but I'm afraid your little friend up there is getting too familiar with her."
Erwin squinted his eyes to get a better view of what Kano was so interested in. After his realization, Erwin sighed with a slight smile on his face.
"I noticed a strange attraction between those two."
"Yes an attraction. Care to explain how this all happened or whether I should even believe in this... fantasy." Kano rested his hands on his knees and buried his face in his palms.
"Well, I'm pretty sure this started as a type of repayment, after all Levi was the one who really saved her. When court was about to execute her, Levi alone stood in her defense. Helped encourage the crowd to keep her alive and search for her tribe. After that she's been very faithful to him ever since. Everyone sees her as his shadow." Erwin chuckled.
"I'm sorry Erwin but I don't know if I could allow this. Many of our people have mixed feelings about you guys. Ghey blame you for Cheoki's transformation and wish death upon Grisha. On the other hand we're very grateful to you all."
"You need Grisha, no matter how much of a stranger he is to you. He's your only chance to letting Cheoki live. She doesn't have much time left. Her titan form is eating away all her energy."
"But at the same time I can't have her get attached with someone from the walls! She is going to have to make a decision between her family and the man she fell in love with!" Kano yelled.
"There is nothing to fear. We can create an alliance, therefore you can live with us in the walls and your people will be protected. I only ask of you to help us on our expeditions. I know you guys know the geography better than we do." Erwin argued back.
"Then what?! Your people will only look down upon us and soon we'll become slaves to your people or maybe even savages. We stand to protect our way of living and our existence in the world. We don't need gear to help us live, staying together has helped us survive for many years. We both know that already." Kano pounded his staff on the ground.
After a moment of silence Kano got ip from his seat and headed towards the beach.
"Kano!" Erwin called to him before he's disappear into the forest path. "you do this for the good of your people. Please look over your options."
Kano suddenly stopped and turned his head slightly back.
"I'm planning to take my people to another land in the seas. Hopefully one that has fewer giants."
"But still just to let you know, my offer still stands."
