Chapter 17 Do Not Fret
For the past couple of days I have been seperately training with Erwin. The army has created a special harness for him to use so that he can still go on missions but he needs someone to help steer it, which is what we've been practicing. My main goal in the mission is to make sure he's safe, if a titan should attack us I must change to my half titan form and protect him.
The other half of my time is spent with Hanji and Eren for learning how to control our titan powers. In order for me to change to a half titan is to not let myself go entirely, I must still be aware and in control. If we go overboard we'll fully change. However throughout the whole training I was only able to do it, Eren struggled through it.
Eren was taught to listen in his titan form and control himself so he wouldn't zone out. And I was taught to use my wings but I must stay awake and not zone out as well. Both of us had a tough time with this exercise. Everyday Eren and I would go to dinner, completely exhausted or on the verge of passing out.
"You should eat more." Hanji pushed her bread over to me but I just broke it in half.
"I'm not really hungry today. I think I'll just sleep tonight." I excused myslef from the table and retreated to my room.
As I wobbled across the hall to turned to the corner and bumped into someone. I fell back and found papers flying everywhere.
"Tsk, look at this mess." Levi gathered up his paper work.
"Levi! I'm sorry, I was probably daydreaming or something. Here." I helped him pick up his papers. "Where do you want these?"
"Just follow me." he groaned.
I followed him up to the buildings library. I happily helped him sort out the cluster, he gave me an odd look.
"Weren't you just tired?"
"Oh well, I'm just happy to see you. I'm always out in training and I barely get to see you. How's the leg?"
"Doing better. I can tell you had a rough training, your clothes are filthy and you smell like crap."
"I-I do?" I blabbered as I checked my clothes, he was right I was filthy.
"Come on" he dragged me out of the room and led me to the bathroom. He handed me a basket of various little bottles of shampoos and soaps.
"Once you're done changing hand me your clothes, I'll leave you some fresh ones." he said from the creak of the door.
When I had undressed I quickly grabbed a towel and wrapped it around my body. I carefully opened the door and found Levi waiting with his back turned, holding a bucket and laundry soap. When he sensed my presence he outstretched his arm and took the clothes from me.
I jumped into the hot bath causing the water to flow out and seep under the door.
"Cheoki, what the hell is this! You're giving me more work to do!" he barged in as I scream not because he was there but the fact that he busted the door and startled me.
"Alright! I'll help you! GET OUT!" I yelled before he slammed the door shut. Once I finished, I went over to the door where I found a night gown neatly placed on a stool. After getting dressed I looked out the door, there Levi was scrubbing the floor. I tied up my dress, grabbed a cloth and bucket and knelt by his side.
"What are you doing?" he grew irrated. I never noticed how tired his face looked.
"You're tired as well and need sleep. I did say I'd help you." I smiled
"Then that bath was all for nothing." he sighed and continued scrubbing. I giggled softly and began scrubbing.
After an hour of scrubbing and wiping, we were able to finish cleaning ten minutes before midnight. I grew very tired that it became a challenge to keep my eyes open.
"Finally, we're done." he admired his great work.
"Yay, now we can rest, right?" I cheered wearily and collapsed to my knees. He quickly caught me and rested my head on his shoulder. "You had titan training didn't you?"
"How can you tell?" I softly chuckled.
"I can see some faded markings on your arms and a bit on your face."he brushed my hair away.
Within a couple of minutes, I dozed off not being able to hear what else he had to say.
The next morning I found myself on a couch in the library. I wrapped the blanket around me and noticed that Levi had fallen asleep on his desk. I took my blanket off and carefully dropped it on him. I smiled to see him finally at peace and lightly pecked his head.
I lifted my face and noticed that Hanji was leaning against the doorway smiling. "Don't worry this will be our little secret." she winked. Together, we went downstrairs to get some breakfast. It must've been about 5 or 6 in the morning since no one was in there.
Hanji brought two trays filled with food. She sat across from me and began to eat.
"I'm worried about him." I twirled my spoon and stared at my soup.
"Why?"
"I keep having bad thoughts about this mission. Today's our last day of preparation and I feel that I should go with him. I mean, what if something goes wrong?" Hanji simply laughed at me.
"You really are something!" she coughed trying to catch her breath. "I know how you feel, I see girls act like that all the time. But I'm afraid that you must stay with Erwin, he's technically a handicap."
"I thought everyone here is all made of stone."
"Well I always see Mikasa keeping an eye out for Eren and I can tell that she looks at him differently from the rest of the guys. You two have that in common, but you're gonna have to shadow Erwin for this one."
I shrank back in my seat and took a small bite out of my bread.
"Let's make a deal! I'll shadow Levi in your absence and you shadow Erwin. How's that sound?" I reached over the table and hugged Hanji tightly.
"You promise to bring him back safely? You promise that he'll still be walking on two legs? Promise that he'll come home in one piece?" I sniffled.
"I promise that I'll look after him." she patted my head.
