My doorbell rings, making me jump. Who would come to visit me now? Nobody knows I'm back. Cursing whoever it is at the door, I get up and start towards the door to answer it. In my baggy shirt and faded pyjamas, with my sweaty messy hair all over my face, I stumble across the room to see who it is. When I reach the door, I peep through the hole to see who it is and my heart stops beating.
It's Zack. How did he find out that I'm back?
How?
I quickly make a failed attempt at taming my hair and then check to see if I have a bad breath. Too bad, it stinks. But I can't make him stand out till I freshen up. So I open the door.
"Hey!" He exclaims excitedly and then his face drops, "What's got your knickers in a knot?" He frowns. Ah, this. This accent feels like home.
"Nothing? I'm just tired." I open the door wider to let him in and then walk back towards my bedroom.
"Are you ok?" His concerned voice asks me and I let a chuckle out.
Everything but ok, I want to say. But I don't. I just nod.
"I got these orchids for you." I pause in my tracks and turn around. How did I not notice the flowers in his hand?
For the first time in a week, a genuine smile forms its way back on my face and my heart melts. Why do I not appreciate him enough?
"Thank you so much. Ow, do you mind putting them on the table? I have dirty hands right now." I put my shabby self on display for him to see and he gives a confused nod.
"I'll just quickly have a shower. Make yourself at home, there's tea in the pot over the stove and some leftover pizza if you're hungry and also-"
"Ally stop. I know my way around." He smirks and I let out a breath, bringing a hand through my hair with closed eyes.
"Go, have a bath. I'll just catch up with some news." He plops down on the sofa and turns on the plasma TV mounted on the wall. I rush to my room and into the bathroom.
What have I done to myself? I need to stop behaving like this is the end of me, the end of the world. I decided to do this. He did say that he'll be fine with whatever I choose. Get yourself together, Ally. Remember who you are.
I rush through dressing up and doing my hair and makeup and finally when I look into the mirror, I feel so much more me. Hair on point, fragrance on, blue jumper with black denims, a warm scarf around my neck and my Prada handbag on my shoulder. Totally Ally Ricosta style.
I smile at my reflection and walk out to meet Zack. Remember Ally, this is what you've chosen. Learn to deal with it.
"Look at you!" He laughs and takes me into a hug. His cologne puts me off, that's so down compared to..
No. Don't think about him. Stop comparing things to him.
"Look at me!" I repeat when he pulls back. "How did you know I'm back?" I ask as I put my handbag on the center table and walk inside the kitchen for a cup of tea. Ew, what have I done of this kitchen? There's take-away cardboard boxes lying all around, some with pizza ends in them, others with spoilt sushi in them. I need to ring up Mrs. Dudley soon. No scratch that. I need to ring up right this moment. I walk out of the kitchen to hunt for my phone.
"I read in the business magazine a week ago, that Nathan Hale and Ally Ricosta spotted at the airport. Hmm, what's going on? or something like that. Can't exactly remember. But I got that it could be because you're returning but then you didn't call and so I thought that maybe you haven't but then I couldn't wait and so I showed up." He finishes and I smile as I hold up the phone to my ear to call my housekeeper.
