Prologue
Off To War
"Where are you going?"
Slipping into my emerald cloak, I spun around to face my questioner.
"To fight."
Her face fell, hurt. For a second my heart melted and I wanted to stop. To forget about the war and stay here with her. Protect her.
"Why?"
I straightened myself out as I reminded myself: I have a duty. My fingers traced the heart shaped pendant hanging just above my collarbone.
"I was one of the people chosen," I explained softly.
"But-but..."
My step sister's gaze drops to the carpet as a few frustrated tears roll off her cheeks. I watch, biting my lip. She means so much to me. That's why I need to go. I want her to always be safe- to look forward to a secure future.
"I promise you I'll return safe and sound."
A smile slowly stretches through my lips. It was a reckless promise, I know, but as well as comforting my sister- it comforted me.
"I'll promise you'll be safe!" I added, shyly.
She was old enough to look after herself and her father. I'm sure she'll be fine without me by her side for a little while.
"Look after yourself!"
She sniffs and repeats her question.
"Why?"
I tug the hood of my cloak over my head and walk towards the front door. Slinging a backpack across my shoulder I reached for the door handle.
I turned back and flashed my usual calming grin at her,
"Because I know magic!"
