Chapter 25

The Protection

My eyes fluttered open and I felt light. I saw that I was somehow inside a big bubble of yellow gooey stuff. It seemed to be restoring all my power...

I noticed four blurred figures on the ground. My eyes focused as power pumped through my veins. It was the others!

"The Reaper's Rein is over!" boomed a manly voice, "Protection release."

The sphere of liquid evaporated and I fell towards the floor, Alex catching me before I hit the ground.

"Thanks," I blushed.

Then a thought occurred to me. The protection? The prophecy! What was it again?

I felt heavy as I felt the visions come on.

I was back. Back when Theridol explained the prophecy,

'When five girls meet with a special connection,

The great war will end when they find the protection.

Sacrifices will be made no doubt,

When the secret that was hidden comes out.'

Hmm. What was this secret?

I hardly had enough time to ponder when another vision flashed through my mind.

A tall girl of sixteen years stood before a five year old version of myself. She looked so scary and angry- ready to lash out at anything in her way. She pointed her pinkie finger at me and I was thrown backwards, gasping.

"Die, sister!" she spat, dirty blonde hair billowing around her face.

My eyes winded in shock and I was brought back to earth, angered. I've had a sister. No one told me? How did I forget everything, why was my past so far away from my reach?

I scrambled to my feet once I realized I was lying on the floor before I grabbed the mirror and threw it, shattered glass flying everywhere.

"Why?" I sobbed.

Why? I don't understand. Wasn't having to burden the title of darkness enough. Was this some sort of punishment on me for a sin I have committed? What have I ever done to deserve any of this? What?

I clenched my fists, tears dripping onto them.

"Why?" I screamed, the building shaking.

I felt arms close around me and I blacked out, boiling with emotions.

The second time I came around, I felt chains digging into the flesh of my wrists. Why did I have bounds on me? What had just happened?

Then everything came back to me. Jack, the reaper. The floating sphere of gooey yellow stuff. Breaking the mirror. Alex's arms. And my sister.

I wept in the darkness, all memories from my childhood flooding back. Alex and I playing in a sandbox. My sister bullying me every day, stealing my magic energy, leaving me helpless and weak. My father naming me princess of darkness instead of my sister. My sister's rage. My sister's attempt to kill me.

Everything I couldn't recall came back. Ever memory of my pitiful life. Ever day of the dark. Every hour of fear. Every minute of pain. Every second of hope.

All of it. All of it except my sister's name. Her name.

My sobs became louder and I could feel myself slipping to the dark side. Yet, with every ounce of strength left,I lit a fire of hope and stayed in my right mind. Then it all made sense in one moment.

The protection. It protected me from my memories of the past. As well as my sister. Then when I went dark. No. It wasn't really me. It was another version.

This hope only lasted a few bright seconds before I came back to reality.

I was bound in chains, in the dark. Probably alone. Where are the others? Are they alright? What happened after I fainted?

I used my magic and the chains turned black then exploded. Cool. Problem one solved. Now for problemio deux.

I felt around the room and came to no corners. Weird. Eventually, I reached a bump. A door! I groped for the handle and pulled. The door swung open and light shone into my eyes, causing me to blink rapidly.

"Where do you think you're going?" I heard a voice ask me.

No. It couldn't be. He couldn't be here, could he?

Lyell came into my view and his stitched smile told me instantly something was wrong. I couldn't stand it though. The big lust inside of me. Even though I knew it was wrong.

I ran to him and hugged him hard, reaching up and kissing him full on the lips.

I pulled back and he smiled, widely.

"Lyell!" I breathed.

"Midnight," he smiled, "I'm so happy to have found you..."
