Chapter 5

The White Wolf

Our journey continued immediately after Tear had finished her goodbyes. As taking a quick pit stop with the Witch of the Lake was not part of our original plan, we had to move quickly. We may not have been given a strict deadline to collect and deliver the files by, but we all knew that the sooner we did, the better it would be.

Unfortunately, Lyell could no longer use his earth platform to transport us as he had used up all his magic energy. Instead we walked, which was full of silent hours brooding over thoughts and many minutes of complaining.

After packing a few more necessary supplies from the Witch of the Lake, we progressed onward. Our party traveled for the next two days, setting up camp in whatever sheltered area we could possibly discover. After long hours of walking, we constantly forgot to train our magic as we were instructed. On our third night, we came across a compact village of approximately 600 inhabitants. By this time it was dark and almost midnight so we decided to give their small bed and breakfast a try.

Using my magic, I 'created' some money in my pocket and gave it to Jade to pay for the three vacant rooms left. (I made Jade pay because I'm 90% sure the lovely old lady at the front desk would freak out about my red as hell eyes). Guiltily, I recalled the time I had done this before to buy an emergency bus ticket home. But what they don't know, can't hurt them, right?

"Is that even legal?" Jade had hissed.

Nervously, I just laughed it off.

All of the bedrooms we had booked came with two beds each. I shared a bedroom with Jade and Tear, having to squish into the bigger bed with Jade. Cyrix and Lyell shared a room and Palo shared with George, earning us all a death glare as we chortled. Each room had en suite, yet cramped, bathrooms but this was luxury compared to the pungent tents we had the previous nights.

Jade had a quick refreshing shower, steaming up the bathroom and fell asleep soon afterwards, hair still soaked but wrapped in a towel. Tear and I both had a shower each too but it took us longer to get too sleep. I was curious about what Tear was thinking of but I decided that after the episode with Jade in the cave, it was better left to my imagination unless it was an emergency.

My mind wandered back to the coincidences of my auntie's and Jade's Mother's deaths. Were they just coincidences or was there something that connected them both?

Thoughts spinning, the warmth of the duvet and the rhythmic snoring from the deeply asleep Jade sung me to sleep.

When we woke up, we bought more supplies- yes, again with the magic money I imagined into existence and making Jade do all the talking to hide my eyes - and continued our travels by foot until we reached a small clearing that shielded us from the rest of the world.

"Hey," Cyrix grinned as we rested, "Why don't we try out those elixirs now?"

Palo nodded, running his fingers through his hair, "Good idea."

We all took out the small vials. Was this really going to work? What if it backfired and something horrible happened? An enthusiastic voice broke my worried train of thought.

"Who's going first?"

Silence fell across us. Cyrix sighed and smirked.

"Guess I'll volunteer then!" he grinned at me.

He swung the vial to his lips and swallowed down the concoction in one go. A soft blue light engulfed him and dissipated after a few seconds.

"So?" Jade asked.

"I don't know..." Cyrix mumbled, "I don't feel like one of my current skills has become more powerful. Maybe I got a new skill?"

He raised his hand at arms length away from him. A pulsing, transparent shield appeared with a flash before him, almost causing him to fall back from the light appearing in his hands.

"Whoa," he breathed, "Yeah, I think I can make shields now!"

He raised his hand again, this time bringing his other with the first. A shield materialized around himself- a thin bubble of a barrier that looked like it could pop easily.

"Someone punch me," he invited, "Go on. Anyone?"

Lyell smirked and molded some earth into a giant fist.

"Are you sure?" Lyell smirked.

Cyrix nodded and the earth fist smashed into the shield. I squeaked and my hands flew to my eyes, utterly terrified for Cyrix's life but he emerged unscathed grinning.

"I'll go next then," Lyell smiled, "Actually, why don't us elemental types go at the same time? I mean we can only get stronger as elementals have no skills but we just control our elements so our control would become stronger."

I peered around and Palo nodded. The two swung the potion down their throats and in the corner of my eye I noticed Tear also swallowing hers.

"Are you an elemental, too?" I asked.

Tear nodded, pocketing the empty vial.

"I can control water," she whispered, in her soft fragile voice.

Jade volunteered to go next and revealed that the vial gave her the new skill of Mediumship- the ability to converse with spirits. George gained the ability of being able to speak to animals and plants rather than just understanding them. I got the new ability of aura reading.

We continued after our long rest, by Lyell's earth platform method again, and soon the sun ducked below the horizon line. George stopped and shuddered as a wolf howled, distressed.

"What is it?" Jade asked.

"That wolf," George stammered, "It's injured."

"Well then, what are we waiting for?" Cyrix bolted off towards the howl and left us to run after him.

After a tiring 10 minute run, we finally reached the wolf. My hands flew to my mouth as I caught sight of all the blood staining the beautiful white fur.

Cyrix immediately fell to his knees and freed the wolf from a bear trap before he began healing the wolf's leg. The wolf stood up, fur matted with blood.

I watched in awe, inspired. Cyrix obviously loved animals very much. He carried out the healing procedure with little to no hesitation at all. Cyrix yawned, evidently healing the wolf had drained most of his magic energy. Keeping in mind that wolves were wild creatures, he constructed a barrier between us and the wolf for safety with the last of his energy.

I stared upwards at the full moon, its surface looked dirty and dull compared to the wolf's shining fur, even if it was stained red. The white wolf tilted back it's head and howled as a soft breeze rustled its fur.

"It says that it's grateful," George smiled, watching on

The wolf sat back down and watched us, waiting. As a cloud drifted over the moon, the wolf faded away into the shape of a young girl. Her white hair billowed around her - a protective shield.

"Thanks for that," she smiled, coated in blood.
