Herbology wasn't her field. Her roommate Iris was good at it.
Susan liked just the teacher, professor Beery, even if he was quite extravagant sometimes. On that spring morning, he sent them to individually catalogue and make a report on the flora in the garden and in the allowed part of the dark forest.
Something not ordinary at last. A whole afternoon in the open air. Susan loved trying to get lost into the woods, even succeeding in it.
But loneliness was her best friend, even if she never stopped being careful.
There were no woods near the place she was coming from, just boring plains and hills. In her darkest years, she heard and dreamed a lot of the forest of Snowdonia, but never had the chance to go there. All her attempts to flee, failed. Only into her mind, she was the empress of a more just world only her silently screaming mind helped her surviving those awful years.
Susan was following the pathway when she felt there was someone else coming from the opposite side. She had her wand in her hand and thought of hiding behind a tree, when she recognized the tall boy who just appeared on the top of the road.
Riddle noticed her too and stopped.
She would have avoided anyone else, who would just have asked for her help, but not him. He didn't need her. Anyway nobody else would have dared to reach the border with the forbidden forest.
So they met and together concluded the task, fast and in a very professional way. They still had much time before the order of going back.
Being far from the school helped them to be more confidential. They had a lot in common, but never talked about that before. Riddle confessed it was great doing something together.
"I'm so used to do everything alone" those words slipped out from her, even if she knew that usually people misunderstood what she was meaning and turned their back to her "I used to live with my grandmother, a bloody crazy witch. Blind, but with a perfect hearing. I have no siblings, I had to learn to survive by myself".
She had to deal with her again during the Christmas break and it turned to be a nightmare; she didn't dare to think how long summer break would have seemed.
"So are you happy to stay here? Away from her?" Riddle sat next to her on a fallen log.
"Yes, very. Like earning freedom after years into a jail. I know here there are many rulers and many eyes that spy on you, but I can stand them. What about you?".
He had a thoughtful expression, when usually he was expressionless.
"I felt like that too, when we arrived here. It was all brand new to me".
"I remember that. But you learned fast, you got everyone's respect".
"You say so?".
"Yes. You disagree?".
"Not really. I still feel like I don't really belong to this place, mostly not to the people. Me too I was used to do everything alone".
"I think you're right. There are many students like us here, but very few can truly understand us, maybe nobody. People who can't imagine what we've been through. And that leave us alone forever".
He slowly nodded "I know right. But I'm grateful we can understand each other, I guess".
She smiled, but inside she was divided between her eternally lonely side and the one that was suggesting her she could finally afford a friend.
"We could go exploring together sometimes, trying not to get in troubles. There's so much to find out here" he suggested.
It was an offer that couldn't be turned down.
Weeks later they crossed the border and wandered into the forbidden woods, finding themselves in danger when they met some infuriated centaurs.
They had to run, the haven was far. Tom was faster, but that just helped the with to speed up. Till her foot hit something and she fell to the ground, her knees bruised, her wand flying far from her reach.
She turned and saw a centaur raising on his posterior legs, the hooves about to hit her, when an invisible force pulled the beast away from her.
Susan deeply breathed in shock when noticed that Tom was next to her and helped her to stand up giving her wand.
Then he deleted the centaur's memory.
They hurriedly reached the border and stopped on the bank of the big lake, where Susan finally sat with her body hurting as hell.
Tom kneeled next to her and washed her bleeding knees, then murmured some spells to make the pain and the cuts disappear. "Impressive" she commented stunned "You already manage magic so perfectly".
He just shrugged "It was nothing".
"You came back" she whispered unsettled.
He looked at her gravely "Of course I came back. We were into this together. Why didn't you call me?".
Susan hugged her knees lowering her head, confessing "I'm so unused to ask for help".
"I know. But that horse could have killed you" his voice softened.
She looked up and forced herself to say those words trapped on her lips "Thank you".
Words that usually she allowed to slip away just when she had to pretend te be a polite girl with the professors.
Riddle nodded "If we're gonna do this together, we need to collaborate. Never hesitate to ask for my help when you need it, agreed?".
It shouldn't have been a big deal. But to her it was.
"Agreed".
