Chapter 29 - 6 Years Later

6 years later

Y/Ns POV

Our beautiful girl Rachel was now 6 years old and we couldn't be happier. She took after Russell's blonde hair and had my (Y/C/E) eyes. Thankfully she didn't take after Russell's lazy eye! She certainly took after my intelligence and Russell's humour, making her the perfect combination of us both.

It was a hot Thursday afternoon and I waited outside the green metal school gates for Rachel. Our of the corner of my eye I saw her, cheerier than the rest of the children, skipping across the yard in her green and white checked summer dress, her pigtails swaying side to side as she moved. She spotted me, screamed "MUMMY!" and ran towards me before tackling me with a hug. We walked hand in hand, out of the school, down the pavement and into the car.

"Mummy?"
"Yes Rachel"
"You know because I've been a good girl?"
"Have you?" I joked
"Yes I have! Miss Williams gave me a sticker today, see!" She pointed to a blue sticker stuck to her dress with the words 'great work!' on.
"Oh okay"
"Can I go to Jade's house tomorrow?"
"Who's Jade?"
"My best friend! She said that her mummy said I could go round to play after school"
"Hmm ... maybe"
"Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!"
"We'll have to ask your dad. Where do they live?"
"Near the school I think"
"Okay we'll have a chat about it later"

When we reached the house we climbed out of the car and headed into the house. Russell was still at the BBC studios so I fetched Rachel and I some orange juice and biscuits as we sat down to watch her favourite disney film 'Aladin'.

As soon as the film finished, the front door opened and Russell came in. "DADDY!" Rachel screamed, running up to him. He picked her up and span her around making her have a giggling fit before putting her back down.

"Daddy can I go to Jade's house?"
"Hold on I haven't got in yet! Who's Jade?"
"My best friend! Mummy said I had to ask you"
Russell looked over to me and gave me the same grin I fell in love with. He walked over to the sofa and bent down, giving me a kiss

"DAD THAT'S GROSS EW!" We both chuckled at rachel who was waggling her tounge out in disgust.

By the end of the day we had decided to let her go. We sent Rachel into school the next day with a small note with my number on so that Jade's parents could text us their address.

The next day

I checked the time on my phone: 4:52. Jade's house wasn't far away so I had just enough time to get there for 5:00.

When I reached their house I stepped outside the car and walked a few steps up to their door where I heard the noise of two giggling, squealing girls inside. I rang the doorbell. The door was opened revealing a man. He looked me up and down and shouted "JADE YOUR FRIENDS MUM IS HERE" without taking his eyes off of me. He had a suspicious glare, as if I had done something wrong and as if he knew me, but I had no idea who this man was. Two girls came down the stairs, one of them Rachel.
"Mum can I stay a little bit longer Pleeeeeeease?!"
"No Rachel" I laughed, "it's time to get back home"
Rachel exited the house after saying goodbye to Jade and ran down to the car. I said a quick thank you to Jade's dad, and received a small nod in response, his expression not changing.

When we arrived back home we had dinner and tucked Rachel into bed leaving just Russell and I alone. I was still thinking about earlier. It just confused me why Jade's dad was acting that way. I must have had a frown on my face because Russell asked, "What's wrong?"
"I don't know. When I went to pick up Rachel earlier her dad acted a bit ... strange."
"What do you mean by strange?"
"Well he was looking me up and down and his expression was like ... mad and angry, as if I had done something wrong to him."
"Weird, you don't recognise him?"
"No, I've never seen him before"
"Well don't worry about it, he's probably just in a bad mood or something"
"I guess"

Russell slid his arm around my waist, pulling me towards him. He twirled a strand of my hair around his finger, calming me down as I laid into his chest, slowly falling asleep.
