Chapter Ten: Nightmares

••Katniss's POV••

I stand there watching as my father pounds the rock for coal with his pickaxe.

"Dad! Run! Get out if here before it's too late!" I yell but he can't hear me. No one can.

I scream as I hear an explosion. "DAD! NOOOOOOO!" I start to cry as I stand there. Hopeless, unable to help as I watch my father get blown to bits in front of my eyes.

Nothing hurts me. I scream and cry. "BRING HIM BACK!" "TAKE ME INSTEAD!"

I hear a voice calling my name. "Katniss!"

••Peeta's POV••

I wake to Katniss screaming and thrashing around.

"DAD! NOOOOOOO!" She screams "BRING HIM BACK! TAKE ME INSTEAD!"

She must be dreaming about her dad's death. I try to shake her awake. "Katniss!" I yell.

She keeps screaming and thrashing around. I try again "KATNISS! WAKE UP!"

Katniss bolts right up and she looks around and sees me. She starts to cry and I put my arms protectively around her. As she cries into my shirt, I run my hand up and down her back. "It's okay. You're safe here with me now. Everything's okay." I say doing the best I can to try to comfort her.

Her crying starts to slow down. "Katniss, do you want to talk about it?" I ask.

She shakes her head into my shirt. "You know you can tell me anything, right?" I question.

She nods her head. "So are you going to tell me what you dreamt?" I ask.

She nods her head and speaks into my shirt. "I-I-I was wa-wa-watching my d-d-dad get bl-bl-blown to bits a-a-and I c-c-couldn't d-d-do anyth-th-thing about it." She says under shaky breaths. She has stopped crying.

"Oh Katniss I'm sorry I had no idea that happened." I say while running my hand on her back. "Are you alright now?"

She nods her head again and I let go of her and we lie down. "Peeta?" She asks.

"Yeah?" I question.

"Will you stay with me?" She asks.

"Yeah. Always." I answer.

Katniss turns around and to face me. I hold her protectively to my chest and soon I listen to the sound of her deep breaths as they help me fall alseep. And we stay like this for the rest of the night.
