BRETT
The next night, Morgan was home, tending to her crying baby, my wife was on her phone looking for patterns.
I lost Nate. He's gone.
Morgan was gently rocking her crying daughter in Nate's office. Reason? Most noise in there. Also, you can never sit still with Briar when she freaks out.
She is indeed like Nate that way. Bad mood? He never sits still. Paces or twitches until he's calmed down.
I see my wife set her phone down checking her basket of wool.
"Does Briar need another blanket?" She asked as Morgan walked into the living room with the baby who was finally asleep.
Morgan laughed quietly. "Another blanket?" She asked. "You've made her so many blankets, Nate witnessed the chest in Briar's room explode, cause he tried to jam another blanket in there." She explained.
"So, what can I make her?" My wife asked.
"Make her boots." I say.
"When will Nate or Morgan ever use boots. They live in California." Phoebe started.
"Hey, you like sewing, make her a stuffed animal." Morgan said silently.
"Of what?"
"An Absol?" She asked.
"Pokemon?" I asked.
"Yep." Morgan smiled proudly.
With a sigh, I look around for a moment. Morgan and Phoebe are located.. Where is Nate?
"Morgan?" I ask. "Where's Nate?"
"Well, I found him in our room." She said. "Not sure what he was doing. He might be sleeping now, though."
"Alright." I say to her taking my chances as I walk down the hall.
Nate wasn't sleeping. He sitting on his side of the bed, looking at a piece of paper that was in his hand.
He looked bothered. Something is bothering him.
But by what?
"Nate?" I ask, making him jump up onto his bed.
I'm sure he heard me, what scared him.
"What?" He asked, folding the paper, shoving it in his pocket.
"What'cha doing, Nate?" I ask him.
"Uh, rewriting lyrics.." He almost stuttered.
"Are they bothering you?" I ask him.
He was hesitant. "Uhm... Well..."
"Nate's what's gotten into you?" I ask. "You've been acting out for a while?"
"I'm fine." I hear him answer me, before, laying on his back on his bed.
"Are you?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, I ju--" He cut off coughing into his sleeve. He coughed violently for a while, before stopping. "I'm fine." He repeated, looking to the left then to me. He sat up, looking at his sleeve.
"Nate, you just coughed up blood. Are you okay?" I ask him, almost freaking out.
He almost looked scared. He looked up at me, swallowing in fear before, looking down. "Uhm.. I.."
"Hey, what's wrong?" I ask him.
He didn't answer me.
"How the doctors go?" I ask him, leaning against the door, which I closed.
"Nothing was wrong. I just went because Morgan asked me to. He just said I was stressed."
"I don't think anyone blames you for being stressed. That goes for Morgan too. You two are new parents, and you have a fussy child." I tell him.
He just looked at me then out his hand in his pocket.
He then shook his head, before sighing.
"I guess it's just.." He started then stopped.
"What?" I ask. "Nate, what's wrong?"
"I can't tell you, Brett.." He told me, fixing his hair.
"Why?"
" 'Cause, there's nothing wrong." He stood up, using his end table as instant balance."
" -- But --"
"Brett, just leave it!" He snapped, stopping at the door. He shoved the paper into his nightstand, by the door. I heard the baby crying in the living room.
"Nate?" I heard Morgan call quietly.
"I have to go help Morgan. Briar's crying."
I watch him leave his own room. But I sat there for a moment, thinking. He is most defiantly acting strange. This isn't him being over tired. There is something he's hiding.. I will find out.
