Pavel meets up with Sulu and Kirk accidentally when he's in a bar at the academy. Pavel planned to have a non-life threating amount of alcohol with Emory, unlike last time but she's running late and he's gotten himself into a game of darts accidentally. Sulu is good at darts, Kirk on the other hand is too drunk to stand straight let alone hit a small target. Sulu despite what it seems, has an incredibly high alcohol tolerance. Kirk, not so much. He's already had way too many shots and is slurring his words a little. Pavel's not as good as Sulu at darts but he enjoys it none the less. He's missed quite a few of his throws but he's not as bad as Kirk, who's yet to hit the board. Emory comes up behind Pavel and takes one of the darts from his hands with a grin. She throws it and hits the board, earning an excited cheer from Kirk and a grin from Pavel and Sulu. It's not too close to the middle but it's better than anything Kirk or Pavel have thrown.
While Emory orders a few drinks, Pavel gives Kirk and Sulu a quick briefing on Emory and their story. He skips over a lot of details like the night that they met and how they've already dated but broken up after less than a day together. He just explains that he's waiting and leaves it at that. Emory returns with two glasses and passes one to Pavel with a grin.
"To friendship," she says quietly, holding her glass up and smiling.
"To friendship," Pavel smiles, bringing his drink to his lips. He can see the sceptical yet smug grin on Kirk and Sulu's faces but says nothing about it.
"Don't let me have more than this," Emory laughs and Pavel nods, requesting the same from her. He knows drinking too much is a bad idea but he hopes one drink won't hurt.
Pavel starts feeling dizzy later in the night and he's not entirely sure why considering he stuck to his one drink plan, as did Emory, but he still can't help stumbling a bit and losing his balance. Emory asks him if he's alright and he has no idea how to answer because he's enjoying himself otherwise. He just explains that he's dizzy and Emory asks if he wants to go home. Pavel declines and keeps pressing on despite the dizziness and Kirk suggests they go to a karaoke restaurant a block down the street. They start walking there and Pavel has to partially lean on Emory. Sulu's too busy trying to keep Kirk upright to really question it but as soon as they're seated in the booth at the karaoke bar, Pavel seems better. Kirk is already looking for a song and trying to convince Sulu to join him. Sulu just rolls his eyes and agrees, too buzzed to really care if he looks like an idiot. They starting singing a song that Pavel and Emory have never heard of but they're laughing and having a good time regardless. Emory asks if Pavel wants to sing something and the logical part of Pavel's brain knows that he's a pretty average singer but he agrees anyway and Emory tries to find something they both know. Pavel grew up on Russian music so he only knows some of the recent music. He finds a song that both he and Emory know and receive the microphones off Sulu and Kirk.
Pavel feels like he doesn't have enough alcohol in him to be singing and looking like an idiot with a pretty girl like Emory but he tries anyway. She grins at him as they sing and he can feel himself blushing madly from embarrassment but it doesn't stop him. When they're finished Kirk and Sulu steal the microphones back and Pavel apologises for his awful singing. Emory tells him she loves it and Pavel can't help but grin stupidly. Emory isn't a bad singer and it kind of just makes him worse. They sit close to each other and laugh at Sulu and Kirk. They're not bad performers, especially as a duo. Pavel smiles at Emory and feels a crazy buzz going through him, he thinks it's happiness until he stands up and passes out.
It's bright when Pavel wakes up and for a second he just thinks that it's morning but he realises he's in med bay. He tries to sit up too fast and black spots dance in his eyes, making him slip back into his bed. His ears are ringing badly and he can barely see. He can feel a hand tighten around his and he knows who it belongs to before his eyes actually adjust to the image in front of him.
"Emory?'
"Yeah Pav, it's me. I'm glad you're okay."
"What happened?" Pavel manages to ask, rubbing his eyes and looking back at Emory. She looks tired and worn out, like she hasn't slept and Pavel realises there's a good chance she hasn't.
"You know how you were dizzy last night? You tried to stand up and just passed out. We had no idea what was happening and we brought you to medbay and they found a date rape drug in your system. I was the one who brought you your drink and it must've been meant for me. I should have been more careful, I'm so sorry Pavel."
Pavel's face softens and he squeezes her hand. "It wasn't you fault," he mutters gently. She pulls up a seat beside him and leans on the side of his bed, close to his face. She smiles weakly at him.
"I'm really sorry."
"You don't need to be," he says quietly. "You didn't know."
"I don't know why, though." She says quietly to herself. "I watched the bartender pour them and I had my eye on them the whole time..."
"Don't worry about it," Pavel says, honestly. "I'm fine now."
"You're not fine now," someone interjects. Pavel recognises the slightly disgruntled doctor's voice and sighs. He knows McCoy to be a little unsettled if anything and he figures there's very little point in arguing. "You have to wait until this stuff leaves your system. It's not something to be taken lightly. We've given you a few different things to counteract it but we don't want anything happening to you in the meantime."
"Do you know what drug it was that was in my drink?" Pavel asks, curious.
"It's a recently new kind called Enspirit or something. It's a spray type so it's odourless, colourless and applied quickly."
"I bumped into someone holding a spray!" Emory says angrily, thinking back to the bar. "I thought it was like perfume or something he was spraying, I didn't think he sprayed it anywhere near me. When I tried to move passed him he must have gotten it in my drink."
"Do you remember what he looked like?" McCoy asks, picking up and turning on his PADD.
"Actually, now that I think about it, he may have been a she. Maybe the drug was meant for you, Pavel. She had really short hair and looked human from what I remember. Umm, I don't remember much else. Except her eyes, they were bright green, like a really really bright green."
Pavel frowns a little and McCoy takes a few notes on his PADD.
"I'll discharge you tomorrow morning," McCoy mutters, nodding towards Pavel. He thanks the doctor and sits quietly with Emory for a while.
"I don't expect you to stay with me," Pavel says gently. Emory smiles at him and shakes her head. Pavel knows she'll stay, and he knows he'd do the same thing. She's got her hand over his, rubbing it gently, but it's calming him and he kind of needs it. Her hands are soft and gentle, something he likes a lot more than he can admit. He feels sleepy and sore but he doesn't really want to sleep. He likes just sitting quietly with her.
