Pavel wakes up with more holes in his memory and he has no idea where he is. He sits up realising he's not in medbay, that he's not in his own room either. He feels panic setting in and he stands. He's not wearing the medical issue clothes he remembers being asleep in. He's in a pale grey t-shirt and jeans. He has socks on and no shoes and he feels a faint throbbing in his head. He finds the door to the room he's in and steps out of it, looking around. He's in someone's quarters and he feels like it's not Irina's or Emory's. He sighs, calling out and seeing if anyone hears him.
"Pavel?"
He freezes, widening his eyes a little. Sawyer is there, asking if he's okay.
"Why am I in your room? I don't remember what's going on, I thought you and Emory were roommates? What happened to medbay?"
"Take a seat," she suggests, gesturing towards the couch. He does, questions starting to pile in his head. "More holes in your memory?" She watches as he nods, asking what he remembers last. He tells her about medbay and his eyes turning orange and she doesn't say anything. He asks for an explanation and she sighs, nodding.
"Pavel, this isn't the first time you've woken up with lapses in your memory. I'm sure McCoy has mentioned my theories and I've been testing them. You've been staying with me and I've been monitoring you but for the past few days you're still not remembering anything since your eyes turned orange."
"Can we start from the beginning? I want to know your theory."
"No, not yet. I need to run a few more tests first."
"I'm not some kind of test dummy. I want to know what's happening to me. Where's Emory? I want to see her."
Sawyer is a little unsure how to respond to his tone. She hasn't made eye contact yet and he worries about what colour his eyes currently are. He asks if he can use the bathroom and she nods pointing him towards it. Pavel goes straight to the mirror and makes squeals uncomfortably as soon as he sees himself. His eyes are purple again but they're a far brighter purple than last time. He goes right up close to the mirror and studies them, frowning to himself.
When he comes back out Sawyer is talking to someone else and Pavel peeks around the corner to see McCoy. Pavel joins them and McCoy looks into his eyes a little before saying anything.
"Alright. We'll put you out of your misery. You've been waiting to hear long enough. Sawyer, do you want to explain?"
She nods, though it looks like she doesn't exactly want to. "I've linked what's going on with you to the transporter incident."
"I was worried you'd say that."
"When you came back, the transporter had this weird signature come up in its programming. When you started writing up your theory and weird things started happening to you, that's when I started trying to find a pattern in your theory and the signature. Which I did. When your eyes started changing colour, I went back and checked the transport again and there was more rogue coding. The day when the botany lab blew up, I had another idea. The signature that had been coming up was a foreign one, yes?"
"It wasn't from this timeline..." Pavel suggests, to which Sawyer nods.
"I'm calling it the déjà vu code. It's causing you to relive things that have happened in the alternate universe."
"Wait, what now then? Can we delete the rogue coding and I'll stop having all these weird episodes?"
"It's not that simple," McCoy interjects. "Looking at this medically, because codes now represent a part of your memory, or something like that, deleting it could be detrimental to you."
"So I'm stuck like this? I'm stuck in this limbo where I have to stay in medbay getting monitored and can't work?"
"That's where I come in. I think that we can reprogram the transporter again. It might take a bit of time but I've made a start."
Pavel sinks into the chair a little, realising he has a lot to take in. He sighs, muttering to himself in Russian. He asks again if he can see Emory and McCoy looks at Sawyer. She nods, telling them she'll go find her.
McCoy explains what's been happening the past few days, none of which Pavel remembers. Now that his eyes are back to a shade of purple, McCoy suggests that he might actually remember what's going on. Pavel can only hope. McCoy leaves when Emory comes in and Pavel's glad to finally see her.
"Heard you can't remember the last few days?"
"Not at all. The last time I remember seeing you was when you told me about your snow dream."
"Wow, okay. I should catch you up on everything. We had a conversation about pets. You told me about the bird you had as a child. I had this asshole cat. You told that you had a long conversation with Irina. You didn't give many details about what happened but you said you really sorted things out with her. We also ate stir-fry together and talked about our next shore leave. It was really nice, it was a shame you don't remember it."
"This is what I've been waiting to do with you. Just enjoy your company and chat."
She smiles at him, taking his hand. "Can we just stay for a while? Lay on your bed and I can tell you about my asshole cat?"
He grins, standing up and taking her hands. They lay down on his bed and she cuddles close to his chest, smiling to herself as she talks. Pavel's glad to finally be out of medbay and just spending time with her, even if he has holes in his memory. He learns more about her asshole cat and tells her just how much she missed this.
She giggles. "You said that last time but you know Pavel, I don't think I'm sick of hearing it."
