Captain Kirk and Spock are arguing as they come onto the bridge. It's something that happens now and again but this time it seems a lot more serious. Kirk takes his seat and sighs, looking out into the vastness of space and thinking.

"There's a trading post a few hundred lightyears away from here. It is currently being taken over by Defarrian Space pirates."

"Deffarian, sir?" Sulu asks, a question playing on everyone's minds. Not even the captain was familiar with the term until a few minutes ago.

"They're genetically modified aliens of all descriptions. From all kinds of planets, maybe even some humans. They're very dangerous and don't like to be interrupted. However, there are forty innocent people on that trading post."

"So, basically, we don't know whether to assist the people there or not..." One of the crew says, a little

"Precisely," Spock mutters. "Risking our own crew is ill-advised but the captain insists that-"

"Well, we can't just leave them there, Spock."

"Is there anything stopping us from just beaming them aboard, Keptin?" Pavel asks, sitting forward in his seat a little.

"If we start to beam the trading post crew up, it will alert the Deffarians of our presence. As pirates, they may have all sorts of weaponry in their arsenal. Engaging with them in combat is particularly-"

The captain cuts him off before he can finish, again. He seems to have a habit (or perhaps even a hobby) of doing so. Spock seems unphased, he's probably well accustomed to it by now. "Spock, as I said, we can't just leave them there either. They're people too, who are we to assess the value of their lives?"

"The needs of the many outweigh the news of the few," Spock says, watching the captain for some kind of reaction.

"I know, I know that Spock. We just need to think of a way out of this."

"Keptin," Pavel says softly, feeling all eyes onto him. "Perhaps if we were to beam someone out of the hostage crew while simultaneously beaming someone from out crew onto the trading post, it would go unnoticed by the pirates. If we could do this with a few crew members and have concealed weapons and had communicators on us as well... This might be a little easier if we could access trading post's camera footage. We could see who was wearing what, who could be swapped out unnoticeably..."

"That could work," Sulu mutters, looking over to the captain, who looks at Spock.

"That sounds like a viable option, Captain. Although, beaming someone in and out at the same time... As far as I'm aware it hasn't been done before."

"Not with anything living," Pavel says quietly, all eyes coming back to him. "Well, you see, in the time before we boarded, Mister Scott and I had been working on how to make the transporter PADD perform two functions at once. That is, beaming in and out simultaneously, without the two objects getting scrambled. We didn't have much luck at first, we made a few fruit hybrids when trying to beam different fruits at the same time but recently it has been a little more successful. We still haven't beamed anything living yet..."

"That may have to do, I want you to go talk to Mr Scott and explain what's happening. Spock, come with me, we need to organise an away team. Sulu, you have the conn."

"Aye sir," Sulu mutters, standing up and taking Kirk's place in the chair. Pavel gives him a slightly concerned look before leaving his seat. He knows Scotty won't be happy.
