chapter eight

We left early morning 6 am Christmas Eve. I changed into some black skinny tight jeans, a sweater wrap and some flats. I curls my hair and he wore his black beanie. I was so excited to see my mom. I haven't seen her since graduation. A couple of hours later, we arrived on to the dirt road. I started to get nervous.
"Which house is it babe?", Mike said.
"Take a right after this turn. It's the brick house.", I said. We turned and I immediately saw a bunch of cars in the back driveway. I guess Mike was meeting my entire family. We parked behind my uncle's truck.
"Are you nervous?", Mike said. I nodded. He chuckled and took my hand.
"You'll be fine. I'm the one that should be nervous. I'm meeting them.", he said. I laughed and gave him a quick peck before we got out of the car.

"Evelin, your place is huge. Are we staying here?", he asked. I laughed.
"We might probably. My family likes to drink and they end up sleeping over. If you know what I mean.", I said.
"Damn. Me and your family are going to get along real good.", Mike said. We laughed and walked up on the porch. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. I could hear all the kids and gossip that was going on early 12 pm. I could also smell the preparation of the food. No one answered so we walked in.
"I'm home!", I said as we walked in.
"Mija!", my mom said as she turned around from the sink . I ran up to her and gave her a tight hug. I could hear her cry in my ear. I took her face in between my hands and wiped her tears.
"Don't cry mami. I'm here and I'm not leaving yet.", I said. She smiled and hugged me again. I kissed the top of her head.
"Malle, quien es? ( maye who is it? )", my aunt Lorena said.
"Tia! ( aunt! )," I said.
"Evelin.", she said. I ran up to her and gave her hug.
"I was wondering when I was going to see you again.", she said.
"Same here tia.", I said. She laughed.
"Who's here?", my aunt Karla said.
"I'm here tia. Come here.", I said as she came up to me.
"Evelin I missed you so much.", she said. I felt tear develop.
"I missed you all so much. You guys were right. Being a women out in the world is hard.", I said. They laughed. I went back to Mike. As I was about to introduce him, I was attacked by little ones.
"Evelin! Evelin! You're home!", my little Isael said. I knelt down and gave him a kiss.
"Yes. I'm here. Are you guys being good?", I said.
"Yes ma'am.", he said.

"Evelin, who is this man?", little Andrea said as she pointed up to Mike. I chuckled and stood up.
"Yes. Who is this man?", my aunt said. I took Mike's hand and smiled.
"Mom, tias. This is Mike Fuentes. He is my boyfriend. Mike, this is my aunt Lorena, my aunt Karla and of course my mom Alma.", I said.
"Nice to meet you.", Mike said as he took out his hand. My aunt Lorena pulled him in for a hug.
"Welcome to the family mijo.", she said. Mike taken by surprised hugged her back. She lets go and my aunt Karla does the same.
"Welcome mijo.", she said. Mike chuckled. She let go and he stumbled over to my mom. She smiled and hugged him lightly.
"Thank you for having me Mrs. Torres. It's a pleasure.", he said as he hugged her.
"Oh please. Call me Malle mijo. Welcome to the family. Evelin I'll get your dad.", my mom said. She left the living room.

"Oh, tias. How's everything? I have missed you guys so much?", I told them.
"We missed you too. Why did you have to leave so far. All the family gatherings are not the same without you.", my aunt Karla said. That broke my heart a bit.
"I'll need to come visit more frequently now.", I said giving her a hug. Then my dad came in.
"Mi niña!", he said.
"Papi!", I said. I ran up to him and hugged him.
"I was hoping for you to come. My Christmas has been made.", he said as he took my hands. I smiled.
"Papi, this is my boyfriend Mike. Mike this is my dad Damian.", I said as I took Mike by the hand. My dad gave him a stare and gestured us to sit down. My mom and my aunts went back into the kitchen. We sat on the love seat while my dad sat in his comforter.
"So. Your my niña's boyfriend?", my dad said serious. I heard Mike gulp.
"Yes sir. And I love her with all my heart. I... I would never let anything or anyone hurt her.", Mike said nervously. My dad nodded.
"Good. I don't want my Evelin getting hurt by anyone or anything.", he said. Mike looked at me. I smiled.
"Mija, has he been good?", he said.
"Si papi. ( Yes dad ) I've been watching him too. I love him dad. He means so much to me. I don't know what I would do without him.", I said as I took Mike's hand. My dad nodded still with no expression. He stood up and we followed. He took out a hand. I gestured Mike and he shook it. Then my dad gave a harty laugh.
"I'm just messing with you. Welcome to the family mijo!", he said as he pulled Mike into a hug. I chuckled as Mike struggled to catch balance. My dad let go and Mike came behind me.
"Come. They're preparing dinner. Mike, let's go to the man cave.", my dad said. He went into the kitchen.
