Chapter 7: What is level three?

Previously in Love, Lies and Medicine:

"What is he talking about? What package?" Lucas turned to his father who was taking his phone to make another phone call.

"Answer me!" Lucas yelled grabbing his phone and smashing it on the table.

Grant finally looked at up at his son with a surprised face and said "Why does it matter? You of all people should know BEAU doesn't negotiate with terrorist."

Lucas stood there hands on his desk while the crude man sitting in front of him looked straight in his eyes.

"He seems more like a friend of mine than anything else!" Lucas snapped. Grant just sat there looking at him.

"You have a friend that's a terrorist, how lovely." Laken said licking his fingers and flipping through the magazine.

"Jake would you give me a moment alone with my boys." Grant said never breaking contact with Lucas. Jake nodded his head in agreement and walked out of the room.

Lucas released his grip from his mahogany table and took a deep breath, turning his back to his father. He had to calm down before he did something he would later end up regretting. After seeing Marilyn he almost lost it in front of his family. He was happy she was alive but he hated that she was being held captive because of his mess.

"I'm afraid you haven't been honest with me, son."

Lucas scoffed. "That isn't too surprising now is it?" Throwing the words over his shoulders.

"You refuse to listen to what I’ve taught you your entire life and now you've put not only yourself, this whole family but BEAU in jeopardy." Grant said crossing his arms over his chest. "And over what...a woman? Nevertheless, we are going to clean this up like we always have and get back to what really matters, BEAU." Grant stood up and walked to stand in front of Lucas. "I'm curious though, son. Why would this man think he can affect you by kidnapping her?"

"Right after you tell me who he is." Lucas said firmly not willing to bargain for anything else.

"Shame, shame CEO. You should really take more of an interest in who you employ." Lucas' eyes reluctantly fixed themselves on Laken.

"Who I employ? This man is an employee of BEAU?" Confusion swept through Lucas like a whirlwind. An employee? Which employee of his would dare cross him?

"Was an employee" Luke corrected. "His name is Judd Kenton. He's was brought on as the lead scientist for Level three."

Lucas' eyes flashed to Luke. "What?" Luke's words jogged Lucas' memory and he remembered the research BEAU had started 3 years ago to reverse the effects of a lethal virus. "No one knows about Level three. Everyone was paid off, I made sure of it."

"Well, you weren't thorough because this man-" Laken said pointing to the television. "-is threatening to talk, and usually that wouldn't be a problem, considering it would be his word against ours, but the real problem is he wants the package in exchange for your little playmate."

"I don't understand? What package?" Lucas asked utterly confused.

Laken shot him a murderous glare. "Please tell me you're joking." Laken rose to his feet thrashing the magazine to the floor. "Please tell me that's your lousy excuse of a joke." Laken let out a humorless laugh then dramatically looked at his father, Luke than back at Lucas. "The package is Judd Kenton's son! You know the 18yr old kid who was one of the 40 security guards who was accidentally infected with the virus BEAU developed? Am I jogging your memory kid brother?" Laken asked in a mocking tone.
