By far the most awkward dinner I have ever had." Lucas thought. He picked up another forkful of chicken and placed it in his mouth.
What is going on between these men? They haven't uttered one word since dinner started. Marilyn thought. She looked at Lucas, who was seated beside her at the head of the table, then at Grant who was straight across from Lucas, at the end of the table.
I can't believe Jane kissed me! What on earth could that mean? I wish I wasn't such an idiot when it came to woman! Luke said to himself emptying the last of his wine in his mouth. "Greta?" He called out.
Everyone's head popped up to Luke. He was the first one to say anything since dinner started but unfortunately it wasn't directed to them.
Greta popped her head around the door to the dinning room. "Yes sir."
"More wine, please."
"Right away sir."
For the first time since dinner started Lucas regretfully glanced Grant's way. He would have looked away, like he planned to but he couldn't. Grant was looking at Marilyn in a way that was unsettling. He noticed Grants eyes traveling up the length of her face taking in her beauty, the beauty that belonged to Lucas. Lucas watched his father curiously as Grant watched Marilyn inquisitively.
I've passed Harvard Business school with honors, am COO to a multi-national business and run a illegal human experimentation lab right under the nose of the government, yet I can't decipher the spontaneous actions of a female! Luke yelled to himself. He grabbed his fork and stuffed the chicken in his mouth. He went to sip his wine but found it empty as before. "Greta!"
"Coming sir." Greta yelled back.
Where do I know this woman from? Grant thought. Her eyes look familiar. Too familiar.
Greta came rushing through the dining room door with the wine in hand. "Sorry sir. The kitchen utensils are not packed away and I couldn't find the corkscrew."
"Yes, yes. Its alright. Leave the bottle." Luke said rushing to drink more wine.
I hope they don't think the chicken is too dry. Is it? It shouldn't be. Is that why Luke is asking for more wine? But I sauteed it for hours! Marilyn poked at the chicken in her plate curiously hoping it was at least edible.
Why is he looking at Marilyn like that? Lucas tightened his hand around the knife and fork and watched Grant with anger.
Maybe Lucas is right. Maybe she does have some unresolved emotions for me from childhood. But how could she? She is supposed to hate me. I "apparently" am responsible for her sister-in-law's death. But, maybe she knows I had nothing to do with it. Luke really hoped that was the case. Now that there was a possibility that she might have feelings for him he could feel something stirring up in him as well.
"Marilyn?" Grant called breaking the awkward silence.
Lucas grew even more tense.
Marilyn dropped her fork and looked Grants way. "Yes?"
"The chicken is delicious. Wonderfully moist and you're right, it pairs perfectly with the wine."
"Thank you. I was beginning to think it was a tad dry."
"Nonesense. Tell me, where did you learn to cook so well."
"My mother. She was a chef in New York."
"Was?"
Marilyn looked down at her plate then back up at Grant. "She passed away. Car accident." Lucas reached out his hand and covered Marilyn's hand in comfort.
