I sat silently on the balcony staring down into the woods as it stared blankly back, not giving the answers I needed. My cheeks burned from the wind nipping at them but I was concentrating, over thinking the issue at hand. I had been out here an hour it seemed, maybe it would've felt like the more realistic twenty minutes if I wasn't antsy. How do you tell someone something like this? It's life changing.
"Why can't you be more like mom? Take pride in yourself Liz. This is the news you've been waiting for isn't it?" I spoke to myself as if I were across the room. Or at a table with a cloned version of myself, criticizing its program flaws out of envy. I ran a hand through my hair, gnawing at my bottom lip. It has to be true. It just has to.
"Beautiful, you up here?" Jordan asked softly as she stepped out onto the balcony with me. She pulled her coat tightly over her body and I finally took notice to how quickly she was losing the baby fat. Three weeks of looking after a newborn baby does a girl good I guess. I gazed up at her and she noticed the puffiness of my eyes and runny makeup.
"What do you need? Carson asleep?" I asked, wiping my face and attempting to smile. Jordan wasn't fooled. She knelt in front of me.
"Liz. What happened?" She responded, avoiding my questions all together. I gave it another try, plastering a smile on my face.
"Nothing Honey. Why?" I replied and stood up swiftly, the tests falling from my lap. All four scattered across the wooden boards with muffled thuds and I gasped, dropping to the floor to gather them. Jordan grabbed my wrist as I sniffled again and reached for the third one. She slid it out of my hand and pulled the tip off, examining it closely.
"Is this what you've been hiding since Christmas morning?"
"I thought when I was sick almost the whole morning it was a hangover from all that drinking we did. But it's gotten worse and worse. Every morning I have to rush to the bathroom, lie to Alex. It's not just that either. I haven't had my monthly. I was due two weeks ago Jordan." I spoke desperately. "I was waiting on the last test."
"They all four say positive Liz. Honey, looks like you are carrying a baby in that tummy." She smiled at me, picking up all the tests and standing. I stood too, stepping inside with her and closing the door. I sat on the edge of the bed looking eagerly at her as she paced back and forth.
"Well we can do this three different ways. First, keep it between me and you until they notice weight gain and swelling. Second, tell just Alex, Andy and Hunter for the time being. Third, strut our happy butts out there and tell them all. Together. Me and you." She finally spoke up. I began feeling sick and swallowed hard, holding down my dinner. I looked back outside at the darkening raven tainted sky. "Lets get this over with." She added, yanking me up off the bed.
My stomach did flips as we descended the stairs into the living room. Jordan carried the tests behind her back, standing in the doorway with me by her side.
"Guys, we got some news." Jordan stated excitedly. They looked at us with confused expressions. Not everyone was present but Hunter, Alex and Andy were the important people in this situation. "Liz, you want to tell them?" She asked and I sighed, throwing my fear out the window in my mind. Goodbye panic and anxiety.
"Um... Well." I started, staring holes in my feet. "I'm pregnant." I mumbled.
"WHAT?" Alex screamed, flying off the couch and grasping me in his arms, lifting me off the ground. Took that way to well for a guy who's the lead singer in a major band.
"Yea, four tests. Four positives." I grinned and he set me down, cupping his hands around my face and kissing me passionately. Jordan handed Hunter and Andy the test, both just sat there, wide-eyed for a second before Hunter let out a high squeal, throwing herself on the floor and flapping her arms around wildly.
"I'm officially an uncle. A real uncle." Andy rambled on under his breath. "I-I can't believe this."
'NIGHT TIME ^~^ Because I have the power to skip scenes... BAM! Scene Skip'
"Looks like I have to leave you guys behind. We had a good run boys but it's time to end this." I sighed, giving the half full pack of cigarettes in my hand a doleful glance before tossing them into the fire. Arms wrapped around my waist.
"I'm proud of you." Alex hummed in my ear and in closed my eyes, relaxing against him.
"For what exactly?" I replied quietly and looked up at him. I had never enjoyed smoking like some people. It happened unintentionally during my buck wild high school years and I never could kick the habit. Now that I think about it, I didn't have a reason to quit until now. This baby has the power to do anything it wants.
"Giving that up so easily. Hey babe guess what?"
"What?"
"We're bringing in the new year with this late Christmas present." He added. Just as I opened my mouth to replied a snowflake fell from the sky and broke my thought train. I averted my gaze to the sky as millions of white flurries fell to the already white ground, slicing through the ebony. They caught in my hair, painting my eyelashes and grazing my cheeks gracefully.
"The best Christmas present ever." I whispered, hugging Alex tightly.
