why the sochi olympics were so much fun

My best friend recorded all the coolest Olympic events for me, and when I went over to her house we would watch them. We had favorites, and cheered for teams, and most of all, the Hetalia fandom had a blast.

I drew several pictures to celebrate the event, and one of my pieces randomly BLEW UP on tumblr. I drew a cute, simple comic and returned to about 3,000 notifications, and they just kept climbing. It was my first experience with finding huge success within a fandom— people on deviantart, before I got premium and changed my username, actually stopped by the picture posted there to inform me that it was on tumblr and "going around like wildfire" just in case I hadn't given permission to post it!

My favorite parts of the Olympics are generally the opening and closing ceremonies and the walk of nations, and this year was no exception. I did a bunch of art based solely on that.

Switzerland and Liechtenstein

Something about Swissy's anatomy and Liech's face bug me, but I generally like the colors and cute turnout

Belarus and Ukraine

I generally like this one, but god, if I ever have to draw a jacket like Ukraine's again, I will die

I generally like this one, but god, if I ever have to draw a jacket like Ukraine's again, I will die. I had to do Ukraine because my best friend's sister is adopted from there. She didn't really approve of their outfits, though.

France

This is also the header image, of course, as I only have so many pictures to use for that

This is also the header image, of course, as I only have so many pictures to use for that. I wanted to draw him because I thought the French outfits were fashionable, and then learned from actual French people that they generally saw them as too "schoolboy-ish". Oh, those French.

Germany's Dilemma

And this, my friends, was my random knockout success comic

And this, my friends, was my random knockout success comic. For those who remember, there was a lot of confusion and controversy around Germany's outfits, as some thought they were meant to be a subtle criticism of Putin's anti-LGBT policies. This idea was later dispelled, but the shade that was being thrown around for a while was pretty funny. I also thought the outfit was hilariously 'cute' and not suited to Germany the person very much. Thus this comic was born: everyone either thought Germany looked adorable and bugged him about or accused him of trying to be snarky when he wasn't.
Annoying thing: the description of this comic on deviantart explains that I know the jackets were NOT meant to represent LGBT people, but half of the comments have still felt the need to inform me of this.

Unfinished: Opening Ceremony Russia

I was going to do a cute elaborate picture of Russia participating in the opening ceremony performance, but when my app crashed and ate most of my progress, I lost my motivation to continue

I was going to do a cute elaborate picture of Russia participating in the opening ceremony performance, but when my app crashed and ate most of my progress, I lost my motivation to continue. It's a shame, because you can see from what I have that it would have been detailed and adorable.

Do you remember the Sochi Olympics? Whose outfit was your favorite?
