mostly finished contest entry

During my stint of being really active on DeviantArt in an attempt to revitalize my account, I entered a bunch of raffles and contest things. One was an art contest. I barely finished my entry in time, and I didn't have time to do the elaborate painted background I wanted to do, and the hair needs some more work. But I finished the main figure and I'm pretty happy with it. I never draw hands or interesting poses, so it was a bit of a challenge.

The contest required drawing one of the host's OCs. Problem is, they're one of those people who has only ridiculously detailed characters. The one I picked is arguably the simplest one and it was still a nightmare to draw in certain places! I really liked her design, though, so some parts of it were fun.

It might just be because of the orientation of the canvas, but I don't like how it looks from a distance. It looks like it got squished inwards somehow and needs to be stretched out horizontally. Zoomed in properly and at full size (which you can see on my DeviantArt page), the problem goes away. I was also trying to do a painterly thing here, but no matter what I do, everything I draw ends up with really thick lineart. Couldn't really be helped in this case. The design is so complicated that I needed to carefully follow the underlying sketch and couldn't just block things in. To do a true "painting", I would need a much simpler character!

If I ever get around to it, I wanna update this piece to match my original vision. I was going to do a full proper background of a mansion because this character is supposed to be wealthy. As of now, though, this is the entry. I doubt I'll win, though, as there were at least four pieces better and more detailed than mine and there are only three winner's slots.

I drew a hand. I actually drew a hand.
