Deidara, Sasori, and I have been on the move for two days now and they still haven't told me what it is we're doing. Everytime I ask, Sasori won't answer and Deidara tells me that it's a secret. I'll show him a secret in a minute, I'll show him how I can manage to stick my boot up his... you know. He's been back and forth between glued to my side and totally ignoring me. It's almost more annoying than them not briefing me on the mission. Except for asking about the mission, I've kept completely silent. It's in my best interest to stay distant from Deidara. I'm still mad at him, extremely, extremely mad at him, but my heart is still getting used to the anger. He was all I had to count on and look forward to for several months and it suddenly went away. I may be cruel and heartless, but I'm still a teenager sadly.
To keep myself occupied on our trip, I've been memorizing every detail of the outside world just in case I never see it again after this. I've also been plotting various escape scenarios. One must always be prepared for these things, you know. I snap back to focus to check on our location and the area seems vaguely familiar to me but I can't place it. Deidara seems to be antsy, his glance cutting back and forth between myself and the area ahead of us. Right now he is in the glued to my side mood and I hadn't been able to get rid of him. I decide to finally open my mouth and speak to him.
"So, can I now know what we're doing? We must be practically there by now."
"You'll find out in a minute, un."
I growl at him but keep my gaze ahead as we break through a line of nice, healthy trees. We stop before a line of stumps and severely mangled trees. I lift my gaze from the devastation and realize immediately where we are.
"Why are we here? Do I get to go home?" I ask, keeping my excitement dialed down to neutral.
"Of course not." Sasori states, dashing my hopes.
"Then why are we here?"
"Sasori has to retrieve a scroll from the village, un."
"Then why did Pein want me to tag along? Let me get it. I know the ins and outs of this village."
"We're not stupid, un. We know you'd take off or rat us out. You're staying here with me, un."
I turn to face Deidara, my expression deepening into a glare.
"Why the hell did he want me here if I can't do anything!"
"To test your loyalty, Baka. Now shut up." Sasori snaps before heading off through the fields.
I watch as the puppet man disappears into the trees, but I notice he avoids going into the second field and uses the tree line to skirt it. It's a clever move because Shikamaru frequents that area on sunny days. It's nearing sunset now so it's hard to tell if he is still there or not. I cut a glance at Deidara who is leaning against one of the least damaged trees before moving out toward the middle of the field. My body roughly slams to the ground and a heavy weight is on top of me. I growl in annoyance and try to wiggle myself around.
"Get off me you bloody moron! I wasn't trying to run, I was going to lay down. Why waste a good sunset?"
The weight rolls off me and he quietly apologizes. I turn to lay on my back and stare up at the sky as he gets comfortable next to me. A memory flashes in my mind, one from a year or so ago when I first found the field. I had planned on attacking Shikamaru and getting him to train with me but I lost track of him in the woods. I somehow completely missed his field and found this one. Once I figured that out, I backtracked and told him about it and it became my field. We created a sign to signal each other if we were in trouble, we'd flare our chakra by hiding it and releasing it over and over. I don't know if he would remember it or if he's even there, but it may just help me. I glance at Deidara before subtly moving my hands to reveal my chakra before quickly hiding it again.
"What are you doing, un?" He asks, sitting up.
"I couldn't remember if I'd hidden my chakra or not, so I did. I doubt anyone would notice anyway. It's not powerful enough to reach the village." I explain, hoping he'd buy it.
He raises a brow but nods before laying back down. I wait a moment before doing it again only twice and very rapidly.
"Stop that, un."
I apologize and wait patiently, hoping to feel his chakra as well. A moment later, very, very faintly, I feel a quick pulse of chakra and recognize his signature. Perfect. But it will still take him a couple of minutes to reach me because of the large chunk of forest between us.
I get to my feet and stretch, my back popping loudly as I yawn. Deidara stands as well, not chancing the split second I could've put between us if I decided to run. Sasori should be back soon I expect. He can't be that slow to take forever getting a simple scroll, though part of me wishes he is. I smile at Deidara and swallow my pride before slinking up close to him.
"You know, Dei-kun," I start, sounding as flirty as I could muster without gagging. "being in this field has brought back memories of the good times we had. I know it was all for your mission, but don't you miss it, just a little?"
I bring my hand up to his cheek and lightly cup it. His eye is staring down at me, the expression unreadable, but the pink tint on his cheeks shows I've won him over.
"We could always go back to how we were... We'll start over again, right here in this field."
I lean forward on my tiptoes and bring my mouth to his ear.
"Here's where we start..." I whisper as my free hand reaches back and pulls a sword.
