Hidan and I made it back to the base two days later, still covered in dirt. We were both hungry, tired, and ready for showers. It was bittersweet being back at the base without everyone but it was nice to have Hidan back here. I followed him into the hall where he notices the pictures I'd placed on the doors. He goes around to each one and reads them, reading his last. He turns from the door and walks back up to stand in front of me.
"Rude and obnoxious, eh?"
"It's the truth and you know it." I mutter, meeting his gaze.
He stares down at me with a deep, angry glare. I match it with cool indifference, waiting to see what he'll do. He steps closer to me and I close my eyes, anticipating him attacking me like he used to when I insulted him. He hugs me tightly and I grin.
"You look like you've been buried alive with all the dirt on you." I whisper, laughing as he lightly smacks the back of my head.
"Well your hair looks like-"
"I could always put you back." I offer before escaping his grasp and ducking into my room to shower.
After a shower and changing into clean clothes, I walk into Hidan's room to talk to him. We're both alive and we need some sort of purpose. We can't just sit here for the rest of our lives doing nothing. He's sitting on his bed when I walk in, cleaning his scythe and talking to it as if it were his child, promising that the pineapple kid wouldn't hurt her anymore. I choke back a laugh and flop backward across the bed behind him.
"So, what are we doing to do now?"
"What do you mean?"
"The Akatsuki is gone and we're two criminal ninja. We have to have some kind of purpose unless you'd like to turn domestic?"
He shudders at the word 'domestic' and scowls. We both fall silent trying to come up with something to do.
"We could be bounty hunters? You can have your sacrifices to Jashin and I can get more training. We'll have enough money to live off of for sure and it gives us something to do." I offer.
"Sounds like a plan, Short Stack. You know, you could always convert and if you get in Jashin's good graces you can gain immortality as well."
While I admit I have thought about it in the past, I'm not too sure about it. I shrug my shoulders and stand, offering to cook something for ourselves.
In the kitchen I pull out ingredients to make ramen and start to slice the vegetables. To my surprise, he actually helps with the preparations without me asking. As I let the ramen cook, he asks what happened with Shikamaru and where I went afterward. I answer him honestly, not seeing a need to hide anything from him. He understands why I went to see Kakashi and seems glad that he and I made up and are on decent terms. I pour the bowls and grab drinks for us as we sit at the table. While we eat, I start to make unfunny jokes, ones that Tobi told me forever ago.
"What's red and bad for your teeth? A brick."
Hidan groans and smacks his head on the table, begging me to stop.
"What's green and smells like blue paint? Green paint."
"I'm already regretting you digging me up."
"Mmm! Funny jokes!" I yell just like Tobi used to. Well, when Obito was pretending to be Tobi.
"Please, stop. I'm begging you."
"Okay, fine. I ran out of jokes anyway..."
"What's on your arm?" He asks, finally noticing the Blue Lotus since the dirt is gone.
"I gained the Blue Lotus while I was locked in the bedroom. I can now see through most objects and I have awesome nighttime vision. There's more to the symbol but I have to find the book again because I can't remember them. So, it's cool that we're going to be bounty hunters now, but I have one condition: Next time there's a pervert, you're dressing like a girl and going in there."
The shock on his face makes me laugh so hard he pushes me out of my chair and I smack the floor. I slowly get back onto my seat and wipe the tears from my eyes.
"It's true. That's what's going to happen. I promise."
"You're impossible, Koneko." He mutters, collecting our dishes and putting them in the sink.
"You know you like it." I respond, sticking my tongue out at him.
He doesn't reply so I take the opportunity to annoy him further with something I'd taunted him with over the years.
"See? I knew you liked me."
He makes a slight choking sound and I giggle in response before getting up and kissing his cheek.
"It's good to have you back, Hidan." I whisper before taking off through the base, loudly taunting that I'm going to steal his scythe.
