Fall was quickly approaching. The leaves around her window were turning redish gold, the air smelling like crisp twigs, the wind a little chiller than usual.

Roxanne finished the last of her makeup, adding some powder on the tip of her nose to keep her new glasses from sliding off. She sighed, knowing that things had gotten a bit more complicated in her life.

She had to break up with Tony today. She couldn't keep leading him on. Her heart didn't belong to him.

Rumor was that him and Jasmine had broken up, and from what she could see, Max was okay with it. They hadn't talked much since the party, both of them avoiding each other as much as possible. She knew why she was avoiding him, but maybe he was just avoiding her because she was avoiding him? Who knew? It was so complicated.

Stacey was already waiting outside, both agreeing to walk to school instead of drive. It was only an hour walk to campus, and since their first class didn't start until noon, they figured they'd get the exercise.

"Don't you just love this weather?" Stacey asked, her hair up in a ponytail. "Makes me feel festive."

"In what way?" Asked Roxanne knowing exactly where Stacey was going with this.

"A halloween party! Oh my gosh Roxanne it would be so great!"

Roxanne sighed. She didn't want anymore parties.

"Don't tell me you don't want a party?"

"I don't Stacey." She said as they made their way down the hill. "Enough parties, at least at our house.  Plus midterms are coming up in a month or so. I'm going to be very busy."

"You study too much," Stacey commented, shaking her head. "It's our last year."

"Yeah, but I'm majoring in Biology, we don't get breaks. I have a thesis to start as well." She responded a bit annoyed. Stacey always had more time to do as she pleased.

Stacey said nothing. Roxanne knew she was right. She was still trying to get over the last party they had.

"Yo, you guys are walking to campus?" Bobby pulled up in their van, Max sitting on the passengers side. Roxanne felt her face get hot. Max just looked at her and waved and went back to looking down at his magazine.

"Yeah, we figured it's a nice day, why not?" Stacey said.

"No way, get inside. My girls not walking to school. Not on my watch," Bobby said honking his horn.

"I rather not," Roxanne said, feeling uncomfortable at the formality in which Max had greeted her.

"Why not? What's wrong Roxanne?" Stacey asked, annoyed. Roxanne shook her head and kept walking, not bothering to say anything to anyone. She heard Stacey apologize to Bobby and as the van drove past them Roxanne avoided looking up.

"ROXANNE." Stacey yelled and she felt her whole body turn as Stacey pulled on her arm. "What the heck is up with you?"

Roxanne didn't feel like talking. She had too much on her mind, it was as if at any moment she was going to explode. She could feel her eyes water.

"If you don't talk to me, how can I help you?" Stacey said hugging her.

Max sat in his calc class, doodling on his paper. That morning had been weird, mainly because of Roxanne. She looked out of it, and Max didn't want her to walk to school, but he didn't want to push her more than he felt he had. He had accepted the fact that Roxanne was the past and nothing more. He just had to reinforce it in his skull day after day.
