She had always known who Max Goof was.
Always.
Why is he such a catch to the ladies now? Why now?
Mona sat at her desk, the rain hitting the window hard as she scribbled in her diary. She lived alone in a small room on campus, never having wanted to join a sorority or any clubs. She spent her time in the art room or at the library, doing anything to keep her mind busy. It wasn't until Roxanne showed up again that her life became a confused puddle of uncertainty.
He finally noticed me today, can you believe it diary? He has no clue who I am or that we even knew each other before. Roxanne doesn't even remember me, and I basically drugged her that night at the library. The world can be so cruel and yet it's up to me to change my own circumstances...
She put her pencil down. She took a sip of water and looked over at her bookshelf. She had so many diaries, dating back to when she was in elementary school.

She had never been pretty, or the most popular. She had lived in the shadows, against the walls all her life. She didn't like attention, but she wanted someone to see her. Anyone.
Max had noticed her back in 7th grade. He sat next to her in Algebra, a thin quiet boy who never did his homework and was always landing into trouble. She loved the way he would talk to her about random things, even if it was just to pass the time. She would bring him candy and snacks, as a reason to start talking to him again.
"You know, Mona, you're really good at Math. Are you going to become like a teacher or something one day?" He had asked her. She shook her head.
"No, I want to do something else." She said, not sure if she wanted him to know.
"Like what?"
"It's nothing." she mumbled.
"I want to skate." He said drawing circles on his paper. "A pro one day maybe. And if that doesn't work out, maybe some type of scientist."
She couldn't help but laugh. "A scientist? Really?"
"What's so funny? Can't think I can do it?"
She loved his look, and at the time it was something so innocent, so pure that she couldn't help but look for him in the hallways, walk by his class right when she knew he was going to come out, and even get on the wrong bus at school just to be closer to him. She had no friends, and other than in Algebra, she never talked to him.
It was like this until high school. She had gotten her braces off, and had cut her hair to make herself look a little more presentable. She wanted her freshman year to be the year she confessed to Max how she felt.
She had met Roxanne then, a new girl who had just moved into town. She had never seen anyone so beautiful. Her red hair reminded her of flames, her shy complexion reminding her of her own.
"Your painting is really good," Roxanne had said to her one day during art. "Do you mind if you help me with mine?"
Mona beamed. She had talked to her! Her first conversation in high school and with such a pretty girl.
"Yeah, I mean, you're not bad yourself." Mona complimented, noticing the rough outlines around the border of the paper.
"Painting is not my forte," Roxanne said, putting her brush down. "I prefer pencil and paper."
"I could show you some stuff after school, if you want." Mona suggested.
Roxanne nodded. "I'd like that."
And just like that Roxanne had become her first friend in high school. Her first friend ever.
They spoke about everything. After a few afternoon sessions, Mona felt confident that Roxanne was going to be her friend forever.
"What? You have a crush? On who?" Roxanne had asked her one day. It was approaching October, and she had grown confident that Roxanne would help her.
"On Max. Max Goof." She said to her, feeling her face grow hot. "I've loved him since 7th grade."
"Love?" Roxanne teased. "How can you love a boy you don't know?"
"But I do know him. We spoke all of 7th grade during algebra. After that, well, we didn't have classes together but I never stopped loving him." Mona said.
Roxanne shook her head. "You can't say you love him. That's too much of a strong word. Who is he anyways?"
"Roxanne? Roxanne are you in here?"
Mona turned to look at the door. A short, curly haired brunette with a sunflower hat stood in the door way, looking around. Who was she?
"Hey, Stacey, I'm over here." Roxanne waved the girl over. Mona was feeling uneasy. She didn't know Roxanne had another friend.
"I have been looking everywhere for you! I heard Jason Sanderson wants to ask you to the homecoming dance! Can you believe it? A junior wants to ask a freshman!" Stacey said, her face red from talking so fast.
"Stacey, calm down. First of all, meet Mona, she's been helping me all this month. Isn't her art amazing?" Roxanne said. Mona smiled. Stacey took one glance, nodded and went back to mumbling whatever nonsense about homecoming.
"Okay, okay. Looks like I have to go Mona. I'll see you Monday?" Roxanne said, taking her apron off. Mona felt excluded. She had thought Roxanne was her friend, but she was picking Stacey over her.
"Sure." Mona said, not giving her another look. "See you Monday."
She could feel Roxanne's eyes on her, but she remained firm. Was Roxanne just using her?

Mona snapped back to reality. The rain was still falling hard, the clock still ticking on the wall. She remembered the day Max had interrupted the school assembly to perform a Powerline Song. She had though it was the most amazing thing ever. Her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest. It wasn't until she saw the way he stopped right in front of Roxanne. He had danced past her and walked straight. Up. To. Roxanne.
It was undeniable the smile, his mannerisms. Everyone knew he was performing for her. What did she know about him? She had said in the beginning of the year she didn't know who Max was. And why was he after her? What did he know about her? Had they met? She felt torn. Tears began to fall down her cheeks. Sadly no one noticed, and no one cared.
But now, Max had noticed. Granted she didn't look like the same scrawny young girl he had known in his youth. She was taller, curvier, prettier. Everything she wasn't in high school. And now Max was noticing her.
She never planned on seeing Roxanne again. All she wanted was Max, but with Jasmine dating him, it wasn't easy to get close to him. She had tried, going to all his games and after parties. But he never paid her any attention. So she decided to change and become what she knew he liked. Patience was a virtue, she always knew this. Now, fate had brought them all back together, and Max was going to be hers, and Roxanne was going to pay for having betrayed her so long ago.
