Jasmine ran her fingers across her cheek, feeling where her mascara ran.

It was later in the day, and she was having another mental breakdown as she cleaned her apartment, trying to get rid of the smell of smoke. It reminded her of him. She couldn't fail Mikolaj right now. She couldn't think of Max.

She remembered it like it was yesterday. She had been a constant smoker, not to mention drinker. She had ran into Max at a bonfire party, after the end of their freshman year. He had been the center of attention, and she had really wanted him then. She had been attracted to his aura.

She had felt guilty at not seeing how Brad was doing at the hospital. She was embarrassed to be attached to him. She wanted nothing to do with his cheating self. She was disappointed at him. He had made himself into the biggest joke on campus. She couldn't have her name ruined like that. She had worked so hard to be popular.

She caught Max staring at her often. At first it seemed like he had recognized her, but that was impossible. They had never met. She used that to her advantage. She kept smoking, trying to look mature, seductive. His friend PJ approached her, asking her if she was related to someone named Roxanne. Now she knew why. She did have some resemblance to Roxanne, they both had bright auburn hair. Not that she would ever admit it.

"No, I don't know anyone by that name." She said, placing the cigarette back in her mouth. "Why do you ask?"

She remembered how nervous PJ looked, not knowing what to say. That's when Max came over, wearing a loose button-downed  white shirt and a dark tee underneath. He took a seat next to her and took the cigarette out of her mouth. She pouted.

"Girls shouldn't smoke." He said, offering her a smile.

"Why not?" She teased, liking where this was going. She sat closer to him, making sure he got a clear view of her eyes. Her eyes always made guys go crazy. Brad had said so.

"Premature aging, it's not cute." He said. She felt a little off. He wasn't trying to woo her at all. He was being smart. She rolled her eyes annoyed.

"You better have a spare for throwing mine away. I don't care if you approve or not." She said, not wanting to be near him anymore.

"Sorry, I don't." He said, still smiling. "I don't smoke or drink."

"Why not?" She asked, surprised. "Not even drink?"

"I'm a Pro Athlete. I've never been into that to be honest." He said. "You remind me a lot of someone. I'm sorry if I bothered you."

"Roxanne?" She asked. "Yeah your friend told me."

"She's the past." He said, but she remembered the look in his eyes. Something was wrong.

"You want to walk with me?" Jasmine asked, wanting to take him away from the crowd. "God knows I need something to distract my cravings. Can I at least take a beer?"

She remembered how Max had laughed then and put a beer in her hand. His hand had felt so warm, so inviting. She could still smell the smoke around them. They had walked all night around the lake, talking, holding hands. By the end of it she had gotten a kiss from him, a simple innocent kiss.

She was back in her apartment, dusting off her bed sheets. Where had everything gone wrong? They were happy together. They had three long years together. Where had she messed up? Was it her ego? She had always wanted to stay at the top. She had a habit of always being attracted to strong men. That was her problem.

She had left Max when he had needed her the most. What was wrong with her? She had slept with Bradley all month, but felt nothing for him. Same with Mikolaj. All she could think about was Max. Why was she planning on helping him fail? Both men she had loved fail?
