Mona had no idea what she was doing here, following a bunch of people she didn't like. Max wasn't even paying her any attention, which frustrated her more.
She held on to her arms tightly, not wanting to admit how terrified she felt. PJ's girlfriend was missing, and all they had was the word of a guy who was infamous for cheating.
No one talked, no one said anything as they crossed the thick forest, their flashlights aiming in all directions. She squeezed herself between Roxanne and Max, wanting Max's comfort.
He looked at her quickly, but didn't say anything. She looked over at Roxanne who hadn't even looked her way, and was instead focused on the path ahead of her. Mona sighed.
"Okay, you guys, we're here." Tony whispered, pointing at a long dark dirt road. "We just follow this to the main house and we're there. Bradley, you're sure of this?"
Bradley was pale, but he held his composure and nodded.
They began the slow, quiet walk, each of them aware of the other. Mona knew that Bradley, PJ and Cora walked behind her, Roxanne and Max on either side, with Stacey, Bobby, Tony and Jasmine in front. She wanted to be where it was safer, and the middle it was.
"Before anyone says anything," Jasmine said turning around, "We are NOT splitting up. Understood?"
"We would cover more ground,"PJ argued.
"But you're forgetting that we have someone missing. Splitting up is a bad idea. We need to look out for each other." Jasmine responded.
"PJ has a point," Max said. "We don't have all night to look for Mocha. What if she's in danger?"
"I agree with Jasmine," Mona responded quickly. She did not want to be separated. Especially from Max.
"Then we do this," Roxanne interrupted. "All those in favor of splitting up can leave the group, and those who don't want to can stay together."
"That's the same shit as splitting up." Jasmine said "Ugh, whatever, I tried."
"I see your reasoning Jaz, but we need to find Mocha and quickly. I don't want to be here anymore than you do."
"I'm with Tony." Jasmine said, squeezing Tony's arm. "He knows this place-"
"Somewhat, I never got around to seeing all seven buildings." Tony said,
"Seven? Did you say seven?" PJ asked, his voice shaking. "We have to check seven buildings?"
Mona felt her breathing quicken. She really didn't want to be here. Maybe she could convince Max to leave? No, he wouldn't leave his best friends.
"I want to stay with you," she whispered to Max "I'm scared."
He nodded and said nothing. She notice him exchange a quick glance with Roxanne.
The first building they entered was damp, every footstep echoing loudly. Mona held on to Max, irritated that Roxanne had followed behind. She should have just left when she had the chance. Screw all this. Max wasn't worth any of this.
"I'm going to need you to let go of me for a second." Max said, which caught her off guard. "We need to be looking for Mocha and it's hard with you holding on to me."
She felt her face go red with embarrassment. Roxanne was probably loving all of this, the way Max seemed to push her away whenever she was around. But she wasn't going to let her hard work run down the drain.
"I don't know why she would run off without telling any of you." she remarked, following Max.
"We don't know exactly what happened." Roxanne said.
"I wasn't talking to you," Mona snapped.
Max turned to look at her, frowning. "IF you want to help out, you better stop fighting with each other. Roxanne has done nothing to you for you to be like this."
"Yeah, because dancing against MY date isn't a good reason right?" Mona said, her voice bouncing off the wall. "I'm just supposed to accept it!"
No one said a word to her so she stormed off, knowing it was childish but she didn't know what else to do.
