45- Oh Shit

I had just gotten home from our lime and I felt as though something was off. The skin behind my neck prickled and I rubbed it to try and alleviate the sensation. I re-checked to make sure I had locked the door and pulled the curtain to make sure I was alone in the house. There was only my car in the yard and I bit my lip before going upstairs to take a shower.

I took my time showering, not really in a rush to leave the bathroom. I washed my hair and hummed along to the music in my head. By the time I was ready to leave the water, my fingers had begun to prune and the water felt warm on my skin. I took off the tap and came out of the shower, wrapping a towel around my skin and padded into the bedroom. I pulled on a underwear and a sports bra along with a short pants and vest, once my skin was dry. I left my hair down and made my way down stairs and to the kitchen to bake. I felt in a baking mood, specifically for cookies.

I looked around the kitchen and frowned.

"Rex?" I called out hoping the puppy would appear soon. "Rex!" I shouted and began padding downstairs to the basement. I flicked on the switch and made my way down and let out a sigh when I saw te puppy. He was standing with his tail tucked between his legs looking at the door to go out to the back yard. "You want to go outside?" I walked over to him and picked him up, and almost dropped him when his claws scratched my forearm. "Hey, I'm the good guy." I switched how I was holding him so he was cradled in my arms and went up the stairs to the back yard and placed him on the ground. He ran off and I assumed he went to do his business.

I waited by the door for a good amount of time before I moved to go look for him.  Before I could get very far he came back and yipped at me and I snatched him off the floor before he could run far. I scratched his head and he curled up in my arms and I went back into the basement, locked the door then made my way back to the kitchen. I placed Rex on the ground and went to put out some chow for him before I pulled out my bowl and ingredients necessary to start the cookies.

"You could go in the living room or you could stay here, but don't be in the way." I told Rex as I pulled out the measuring cup. My phone began ringing from the counter and I reached for it. "Hello?"

"Hey, what's for dinner tonight?" Terrence asked and I heard some rustling in the background.

"Food from yesterday, duh." I rolled my eyes and turned around to grab baking powder and salt from the cupboard.

"Give me half an hour, I'll be there and we can have dinner tonight. Okay?"

"Yup, be safe."

"Yes baby." There was a kind of awkward silence, waiting for something to fill it and I remained silent unsure. There was a buzz from the gate and I jumped slightly.

"Someone's at the door, I'll see you in a bit." I said and hung up the phone quickly. I walked over to the door and peeped out, what I didn't expect to see was my brother.

I stared at Matthew who leaned on a stick, just outside my gate with a black car in the background and he appeared to smile. Rex barked then ran past me to the gate where he began barking at Matthew. Marina's earlier words sprang to my mind. Matthew went a wall.

"Rex." I said to the dog, but he ignored me. I went out to grab him and he began clawing at me. "Stop that." I tapped his nose and he shook his head before quieting down. I looked up at my brother and narrowed my eyes at him. "Can I help you?" I asked holding Rex tighter to my chest.

"I came to see you." He smiled weirdly and I took a step back.

"I'm good."

"Can I come in?" He smiled again.

"No." My voice was harsh and he pulled back.

"Gwyn-" I cut him off.

"You said you didn't need me in your life. You said you preferred to die." I narrowed my eyes at him. My brother was not the type of person to go back on what he said, not matter what, he never changed his mind.

"I know what I said, but Gwyn I was stupid. You're my sister. We need to stick together." He smiled again and it felt odd. I took two steps back and his smile faltered. Soon I would be inside, away from him. Soon Terrence would be home and I'll feel better.

"I have to get back inside."

"Let me come inside. Let's talk about this like adults." I continued to step back. I rounded my car and turned, making a beeline for the front door. I ran inside and locked the door behind me. I ran to the kitchen and grabbed my phone. On instinct the first person I called was Terrence.

The phone kept ringing and went to voicemail. My heart started beating faster. I was about to dial my father when the door swung open. I jumped and clutched Rex closer to my chest. The puppy whimpered and I dialled the number faster. Busy tone beeped in my ear and my heart sank. I ran behind the island and grabbed a knife, I placed Rex on the ground and grabbed my phone. I flicked off the lights in the kitchen then made my way to the office.

I locked the door behind me and shushed Rex who was curled up at my feet. I put my phone on vibrate and inhaled deeply. I heard some scuttling noises from outside the door and I moved to the far corner on the same wall with the door. The knob was turned a couple times then the knob fell away and I had to bite my lip to stop from gasping.

"I know you're in here." A male voice called out and I wished my heart would stop beating so fast.

"Did you get her?" Matthew called out and I closed my eyes. I didn't want to see the betrayal.

"Not yet. She's not in here." I released my lip. Okay, there was hope.

Rex yipped and the light flicked on. I glared at the puppy. I looked up at the dark skin man who stood there, pointing the gun at me. I hid both hands behind my back and shoved the knife into my waistband.

"Come here." He moved towards me and I shrank back into the wall. Oh shit. He placed the gun in his waist and came closer to me. He grabbed my right arm and pulled me forward. I stumbled forward and Rex ran away from my feet and began barking at the man.

"Careful with-" Matthew's words got cut off as my fist slammed into the mans nose. I was not going down with out a fight.

"Fuck!" He roared out and took his free hand to hold his nose, the same time I swung my elbow out and hit him in his throat. He gagged and dropped my hand. I scampered away and redialled my father.

"Hello?" His voice rang through.

"Help!" I screamed and before more words could leave my mouth something pressed against my head. I dropped my phone and hoped that it survived the fall so my father could at least hear what was going on.

"Any movements and it's the last thing you do." I swallowed and glanced down at Rex. He was just staring at me, the little guy looked conflicted.

"Grab her." Matthew hissed and the man grabbed the back of my neck and turned me around to walk out the door. He led me to the front door and pushed me out. I ground my feet into the floor and tried to prolong it.

He shoved me again but I held my ground, thank you thick thighs. Matthew sucked his teeth and I saw him come to stand infront of me.

"I'm tired of this." He said and before I could block, his fist collided with the side of my face and my head snapped to the left. There was a stumbling sound and I lost my ground. The man grabbed me more forcefully and pushed me out the way towards the gate and to the awaiting black car.

"Scream and I'll shoot." I had to die one way or another. I let out a loud panicked scream and the pain exploded from the back of my neck and suddenly my body went lax as the darkness consumed me.
