~In which he has a revelation~
It was the second day of our honeymoon and I lay awake in bed as Gwyn slept with her body on mine. My phone chimed and I looked at the bedside table and grabbed it.
Clint: Call when u get this.
I frowned, what did he want with me. I looked down at her again and slowly began slipping out of bed. When I was out and sure Gwyn was still asleep, I went to the door and called my dad. He answered on the second ring.
"Terrence, you at the safe house?"
"Yes, why?" My eyes narrowed and I looked back at Gwyn. She stirred and rolled over so that her back was to me.
"Things are getting out of hand. You could extend your um, vacation if you want. It safer there." He said then shouted at someone.
"I didn't get all that time off from work and I can't live my life ruled by this." My voice came out harsh but I meant it.
"You cyah work if yuh dead eh." He growled.
"Well then they'll have to kill me." My tone was hard and it made it with no room for argument. He laughed; loud and menancing in my ear.
"They not gonna kill you, they gonna go after that fat ass wife of yours to get to you to get to me. But they don't know I'll leave you for dead." He laughed again and my eyes flickered over to Gwyn. I skimmed her body again and my chest hurt.
"We can't stay here." I sounded slightly defeated.
"Well talk to her. Tell her father to put more protectors for her, because I doh have anybody to put out for you. I warn yuh eh." The call ended and I walked back to the bed; she was still sleeping so I put my arms around her and held her to my body.
I couldn't let them take her.
~*~"Hello?" Gwyn answered into the phone.
"Hey, what's for dinner tonight?" I asked as I reached over to my bag and pushed inside the present I had just bought for her.
"Food from yesterday, duh." I smiled.
"Give me half an hour. I'll be there and we can have dinner tonight. Okay?" I asked her as I pulled my van away from the curb and into the traffic, I glanced down at the dashboard and frowned when I noticed I would need to gas-up.
"Yup be safe." I heard Rex bark in the background.
"Yes baby." I smiled again. There was a bit of an awkward silence and before I could say anything the bell rung.
"Someone's at the door, I'll see you in a bit." And with that she ended the call. I placed my phone back in the middle console and continued driving to the nearest gas station.
I pulled up, and got out to go pay the person in the booth too go back by my vehicle to start fueling it. It took more than expected and I sat down and buckled up and glanced down at my phone that had the light on. I picked it up and my eyebrows crinkled together when I saw the two missed calls from Gwyn. Maybe she wanted me to pick up something. I called her back and the call went straight to voicemail, not even bothering to ring. How odd. She had called me no more than two minutes ago and now she wasn't answering. I started my van and drove out of the gas station and drove the rest of the way home with a bad feeling settling in the pit of my stomach.
When I reached the house, the gate was open and so was the front door. I quickly shut off my van and hopped out and went to the inside. To my absolute surprise, Kevin was standing by the steps with Gwyn's phone in his hand. I frowned as I made my way to him and folded my arms over my chest.
"What are you doing here?" It wasn't exactly hostile but it wasn't welcomed either.
"My daughter called me." Was all he said as he handed me the phone with the broken screen.
"Where is she?" He folded his arms across his chest and let out a sigh.
"She's not here. When I reached, the door was open and thee house was empty spare for your little puppy."
"What do you mean not here?" He sighed heavily and took a hand a passed it down his face.
"When she called me, I heard her brother talking, she said his name and some other things. I think she was kidnapped." My head started spinning. I walked away from him and went to search the house, the first floor, the basement, the upstairs and even the yard. And when I came back inside, Kevin stood by the door on his phone and a hand in his pocket and my ears had started ringing.
"Where is she?" Kevin glanced back at me and finished up his call before turning to glare at me. He moved to lean on the kitchen counter.
"The hell if I know, I just tell you what I know." He pulled out his phone again and typed on it before putting it back down and then look back at me. "I feel she get caught up in this war between your father and the men from south."
"The hell." He glared at me.
"Call your father, this involves him." My shoulders sagged.
"He isn't going to get involved."
"How do you know that?"
"Because he told me so." He straightened and moved to stand in front of me.
"He told you they were going to kidnap Gwyn and you didn't do anything about it." He stood tall and we met nose to nose.
"She didn't want to do anything." That was a lie.
"I know Gwyn, she wouldn't be that stupid. If you told her that she stood the risk of being kidnapped, she would of done something." His eyes narrowed.
"Well I didn't tell her that, but I knew how she felt."
"Then why the fuck didn't you tell me something! Why?" He shouted, I took a step back and glared at him. Why didn't I tell him something, maybe I was as much a coward as any man out here, I was able to leave my wife unprotected and let them kidnap her.
"Leave." I said loud enough for him to hear and turned back to walk up the stairs to the master bedroom. I sat on the floor of the room, with my body leaning against the bed and I rolled up my sleeve to look at the bruise that was forming there. Just last night we were talking about the bruise and I had lied to her, I had told her that it was nothing to worry about; when in actuality it was more serious than even I knew.
I had gotten ambushed by my van when I stopped in Barataria to check a friend of mine. It wasn't hard to deal with the little punk who had tried to mug me and after that I ended up going to see my father in Belmont to talk about the little punk and it ended in fists smashing and I had earned bruises on my legs and one unfortunate one on my arm.
I had lied to Gwyn to stop her from worrying. Why, because I didn't deserve her worries. I sighed. This broken woman had me wrapped around her finger and it broke my heart that I had allowed something so horrible to happen to her. I sighed again and only then did it dawn on me, as I sloshed the whiskey around in its bottle, that I was in love with her.
Her smile became that thing that I looked forward to seeing before I fell asleep and when I woke up. I enjoyed being in her company and her nerdy humour was cute and from since the moment I first saw her picture to this moment, everyday I was slowly falling in love with her. Until it was too late and I was drowning in a sea of her love and I didn't know what I would do without her in my life. I had to find her. I wouldn't rest until I found her.
