I Won't Let Go

Ivy's POV

"I'm not saying it's necessary, but it has been a month without a single change. All 'm saying is it would be wise to consider it." I was currently holding a crying Mitch as the doctor spoke. Did he seriously just tell us to consider pulling the plug on Scott when it's only been a month?

"Can we see him?" Esther asked him. She stood next to me, currently rubbing the small brunette's back. The doctor was reluctant to let so many people in the room but finally nodded. The walk to the room was silent, heavier than I anticipated, but it was understandable. What the doctor told us was almost unthinkable. It turned out Scott was a fighter. The most serious injuries he sustained were a few broken ribs and a severe concussion which explained why he hadn't woken up in a month. We had all been to the hospital every day since the first night, but it never got easier.

My arm remained around Mitch even as we reached the room. The slight pull I felt as I took a step forward caused me to stop and look at him. He wasn't moving. "I don't know if I can do this..." he choked out, a hand coming up to wipe his tear-stained face.

"He'd want you to be there for him. You know if it was you, he'd be there," I said softly as I looked up slightly at him. It took him a minute to make sure he wasn't going to cry again, but he soon nodded. I took a few steps back to allow him to go first as I kept my eyes down.

As much as I hated it, my mind wondered to what it would be like without Scott around. It was almost unimaginable, but what I could imagine wasn't good. We walked in, the smell of too-clean floors mixed with the sight of Scott hooked up to several machines made my stomach churn.

His face was cut up and bruised, but it seemed to heal for the most part while he had been in here. As bad as it sounds, I didn't want to be here. I didn't want to see him. It hurt too much. Looking down, I played silently with the ring on my ring finger. Mitch had pulled up a seat next to the bed, somehow managing to hold back the tears as his fingers lightly stroked Scott's unmoving face. It was obvious everyone was too scared to say something. He was too fragile at the moment.

"Maybe he was right."

All eyes were on Mitch as he spoke, Kevin somehow choking on the air he was breathing. "Mitch, you can't be serious..." he said, his eyes the size of saucers.

"At least then we wouldn't have to see him like this."

Now it was Avi who spoke up. "Seeing him like this is better than not seeing him at all. You're just hurting. We all are, but Scott, he's a fighter."

"There's just some things you can't fight."

"But there's some things worth fighting for."

"I didn't see either of you putting up much of a fight when you broke up." Oh yeah... Maybe they knew, maybe they didn't. I didn't really know, but we had yet to say anything, mainly because we wanted to keep the focus on the blonde instead of us.

I finally looked up only to see everyone staring at me with curious looks. "What?"

"We're waiting," Kirstie said with a raised eyebrow.

"What are you talking about?"

"What's with the engagement ring you've been staring at for five minutes?" Mitch asked, his hands wiping his eyes once more as he sniffled a bit.

"Now's not the time."

"I think it is. We're all here."

I stared at the brunette, hating myself as a slight smile tugged at the corners of my lips, though it instantly disappeared. "It's meant to be a promise ring."
