CHAPTER ONE
"Chances of survival are dwindling into single-digits now."

"Hey, bud, where do you think we should go today?" Hiccup stretched out his skinny arms as he talked to his best friend, Toothless. "I was thinking of exploring the Itchy Armpit area again. We didn't get any thorough research after discovering it." He continued to talk, but all Toothless could focus on was the fish in Hiccup's hand. He watched him swing it from side to side as he went on about their flight.
"Hiccup, give your dragon the fish! He's practically beggging." Valka interrupted Hiccup's speech. Hiccup looked down at his hands and realized he still hadn't fed Toothless, so he slid it over to him on the floor and continued his one-sided conversation. Though he was cut off when the gang started to bang on his front door.
"Bucket is stuck again, this time in the fence." Fishlegs giggled to himself. Hiccup rolled his eyes and went on to do his chief duties with Toothless trailing behind him. He would have been shocked if it was anyone else, but this became a routine for Bucket lately.
"So how did you get stuck this time?" He asked the middle-aged man.
"Whip and Lash startled me, Chief." He looked at the skinny chief apologetically.
"Do you remember why they startled you?" Hiccup asked the man, trying to keep his laughter to himself. Toothless didn't bother hiding it though and laughed before he helped Bucket out.
"I don't really remember it. I think they saw something, oh, yes! They did! They saw another dragon, I think it was wild. It didn't stay for long though." Bucket began to ramble on.
"Which direction did it go in?" Hiccup's eyes widened at the thought of a new dragon. Perhaps it was another Night Fury? Hiccup thought to himself.
"What was the name of that island you found again?" Bucket asked aloud. "Oh, yes, Itchy armpit. He went that way. It was possibly black, oh it looked kind of like Toothless over there." Hiccup jumped on the back of Toothless and immediately took off to find the dragon. They flew past trees and rocks, cliffs and mountains. They searched Itchy Armpit everywhere searching for the dragon, along with taking notes.
"Nadders, Zipplebacks, Gronkles, even a Hobblegrunt!" Hiccup complained to Toothless as they were gliding through the air. "We came across basically every dragon species we know, but none of them matched Bucket's description." Toothless let out a snort in response to Hiccup.
"What if it was just Bucket's imagination?" Hiccup said, disappointed. They began to prepare themselves when in the corner of Toothless' eye, he spotted a black dot floating in the air. He flew as fast as he could towards it.
"Woah! Bud, what's wrong?" Hiccup screamed over the wind. Toothless slowed down and tried to aim Hiccup in the right direction to see it. He knew his rider saw it when he let out a gasp, and Toothless darted towards it again.
Once they reached a close enough distance too make out it's shape, they noticed it was, indeed, black. They were astonished by the sight. They tried to creep up towards it without being spotted. They almost made it before being shot down. Hiccup looked down at Toothless' stomach and saw a dragon root arrow sticking out of it. He looked down at the area it was shot from and saw a group of men. As Toothless fell through the air, Hiccup braced himself for the impact. Though the landing was surprisingly soft, it did hurt him a bit. He took a look around before realizing he didn't recognize the place at all. He must have gotten lost again.
Before he knew it, big viking guards were throwing nets over top of Toothless and himself. "If you don't follow our rules, we will keep you in jail for eternity." One of the guards told him and boarded him onto a makeshift carrier with large metal bars surrounding it. He obeyed, but was already coming up with an idea on how to escape. Him and Toothless were in different carts, so it was a bit hard to speak to him. He sighed and gave in, at least for the time being.
Before he knew it, the same guards that carried him was throwing him into a jail cell with Toothless no where in sight. "Where is my dragon?" Hiccup sounded more panic than he intended to.
"Don't worry, he is safe in a separate space." The guards thick Scottish accent dripped from his voice. "The chief will be ordering you to see her in the morning. Here is something to eat, you have a bed over in the corner. If you need any help, there will be guards on duty constantly, just call for them." He was shockingly nice to his new prisoner, Hiccup did not usually experience that. Hiccup nodded and sat on the edge of the bed with his plate sitting on his lap. He took a bite into the chicken leg before setting it down. He was too worried about his best friend to eat, so instead he laid down in the bed and stared at the ceiling until the sun broke through the tiny window.
