CHAPTER FIVE
"Careful with that dragon."
*****
Fishlegs let out a high pitched scream, flailing his arms as he ran off the Snow Wraith. It began to grumble just as Fishlegs got off of it's back. The Snow Wraith stood up and stretched out it's wings before screaming in his face. The rest of the group heard the roar and hopped on their dragons to find the source. Fishlegs searched for Meatlug but he couldn't find her anywhere. His eyes wandered off to behind the Snow Wraith and saw his poor dragon trapped by it's tail.
"Meatlug!" He screamed to get her attention. She looked to him and tried to fly over, but the Snow Wraith's tail knocked her out of the air.
Hiccup rushed in the direction of Fishlegs' voice, determined to keep his friends safe on his escapade. When he reached the source, he saw the fierce dragon threatening Fishlegs. The poor boy was quivering in fear.
"Fishlegs! Cover yourself in the snow!" Hiccup ordered just in time to save Fishlegs from being the dragons midnight snack. Fishlegs dove into the closest snow pile to cool off, making it impossible for the Snow Wraith to find him with it's thermal vision. They noticed Meatlug followed suit, and Hiccup and Toothless got in too. After a couple of moments, the Snow Wraith gave up and wandered away again.
They uncovered themselves from the snow and called out to the rest of the gang. They were all in a group once again, and all agreed that separating was a bad idea.
"With Snow Wraiths on this island, we need to stick together." Astrid pointed out.
"This isn't their normal home, I don't understand why they came here." Fishlegs quickly chimed in.
"We'll figure that out as soon as we have the Skrill's claw, okay? For now, keep on searching." Hiccup suggested to the group. They all nodded their heads yes and got back on their dragons. "Stay in close range of each other." Hiccup reminded everyone.
After hours of searching, both the riders and their dragons were getting tired. It was awfully cold and they still had no sign of the Skrill. They almost gave up, when Snotlout noticed a purple dot sitting in some ice. He called out for the rest of the gang to go to him. Once they were all gathered, he pointed below to his finding.
"Remember, we take the ice block out, not the Skrill out of the ice block." Hiccup acted like he was reminding everyone, but it was more so directed to the twins and Snotlout.
They managed to pull out the block of ice, but then had to figure out how to transfer it back home.
"We could tie it up in rope and have the dragons carry it by their feet." Tuffnut suggested.
"Perhaps we should just submerge it in water so the Skrill can't use its lightning, then use its claw here." Fishlegs said in more of a questioning tone.
"I think it may be better if we just melt one claw, then refreeze it after. Then we know it can't escape and get into the wrong hands again." Astrid improved the idea. Hiccup decided that they would follow Astrid's plan. They managed to find the perfect opening to one of it's claws, then slowly heated it up by using Hookfang's ability to light himself on fire. It was the safest way to melt the ice without it dropping into water immediatly. They noticed the claw move once it was uncovered. Hiccup tried to hold it as still as possible to slip it into the lock. Once they heard the clicking sound, the left the Skrill to become frozen once again.
"We'll open this once we get back to Berk, I don't want to be here longer than needed." Hiccup instructed the group, then hopped on Toothless' back.
The flight back home felt longer than they flight their, perhaps because they were all overflowing with excitement. The chest could contain anything.
"I think we should open it in the arena." Hiccup was hesitant. "I don't want everyone on the island to know about it yet."
"You're torturing me." Ruffnut complained. Ruff and Tuff dragged their feet as they followed the rest of the gang to the arena.
On the way to the arena, Eret ran up to Ruffnut. "Where have you been? I've been worried sick." He exclaimed. "I made some breakfast and was hoping you would eat it with me but once I made it to your hut, I couldn't find you! I tried getting Skullcrusher to help but he's been in a mood all morning."
Ruffnut stood in front of Eret dumbfounded, she wasn't used to having someone worry about her. "I, uh, had to help Tuffnut. He got stuck in another dragon trap, that's what I get for being the smart twin." She lied to him to protect their secret. "Anyways, let's go eat that breakfast." She said and held Eret's hand.
The rest followed suit to the arena. "I can't believe Ruff is willing to miss this. All for a dumb boy." Tuffnut laughed. Hiccup shook his head but smiled a bit anyways. He placed the chest down in the center of the arena and began to open it. When he looked inside, it appeared to be part of a map. There was an island, a Night Fury drawing next to it.
"This must be where the Night Fury's are located!" Hiccup gushed as his eyes opened wider and wider. The rest of the gang piled around him to take a look, though Toothless managed to push his head through everyone's bodies. Next to the island read "Drakkaey, Dragon Island."
"Oh my Odin." Hiccup whispered quietly, just loud enough for Astrid to hear.
"What is it?" She asked with concern.
"I was just on that island. I met the chief. They made me travel through tunnels, I had no idea why. Do you think they have all of the Night Furies?" Hiccup got excited and began climb back on to Toothless.
"Hiccup, you were captured and told to never go back." Astrid consulted him. "Is it really smart to go there?" She asked him.
"I have to try." Hiccup's voice dripped with determination and he stepped back down on to the ground to say goodbye to her. He engulfed her in a hug before waving to the rest of the group. "Please stay behind, to take care of the village." He gestured to the quiet homes. "And tell my mom that I'll be back as soon as possible." Hiccup said louder as he climbed on to Toothless. Astrid nodded and watched the two as they flew into the dark sky.
"Please be back, soon." Astrid mumbled as she led Stormfly back to their home. She looked back to the sky once more before giving Stormfly a scratch and going inside.
